LONDRES, 27 de mayo de 2021.- El portero argentino Gerónimo Rulli fue el héroe en la conquista del primer gran trofeo del Villarreal en sus 98 años de historia.

El Submarino Amarillo del fútbol español superó el miércoles al Manchester United en la tanda de penaltis (11-10) tras un decepcionante empate a uno en la prórroga de la final de la Europa League disputada en Gdansk ante unos 10.000 espectadores.

FALTA DE INVENCIÓN. El Villarreal se adelantó en la primera parte con un gol de Gerard Moreno, y en la segunda empató Edinson Cavani. Los dos equipos sólo crearon un puñado de ocasiones entre ellos, siendo el United especialmente decepcionante por su falta de inventiva.

PENALES TERRÍFICOS. La tanda de penales fue una clase superior al resto del partido, con todos los jugadores restantes lanzando sus tiros hasta que se llegó a un duelo directo entre los porteros. Rulli superó a David de Gea con su propio lanzamiento y el argentino cambió de posición para atajar a su homólogo.

SABOR AMARGO. En un momento dado, el entrenador del United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, podría haber considerado la temporada como un éxito relativo tras haber llevado a su equipo al segundo puesto de la liga. En cambio, el fiasco de la Superliga y esta derrota le dejarán un sabor amargo.

Todo lo contrario para su homólogo Unai Emery.

RECOMPENSA FINAL. Este fue el cuarto éxito de Emery en la competición tras sus tres anteriores con el Sevilla. Por el camino, además, se llevó la satisfacción de eliminar al Arsenal, que le había despedido, en las semifinales. El premio final para entrenador y jugadores fue el primer gran trofeo de la historia del Villarreal. A diferencia de Emery, ésta era sólo la segunda final de Solskjaer en su carrera como entrenador, tras ganar la Copa de Noruega de 2013 con el Molde.

EMERY. Emery dijo: «Mi cuarto éxito en la Europa League no es un secreto. Todo es cuestión de trabajo. Nada más. Por ejemplo, en la última semana he analizado 17 partidos del United. Luego los jugadores han demostrado un gran carácter no sólo en la competición en general, sino también en la final. Han estado fabulosos. «En cuanto a los penaltis, no los hemos practicado ni ensayado. Es algo que ocurre en el momento, eso es todo. Al final nos ha salido bien».

SOLSKJAER. El entrenador del United, Solskjaer, dijo: «Así es el fútbol. A veces se decide en un solo remate, y esa es la diferencia entre ganar y perder. Tenemos que aprender de esto, no solo saborear esa sensación amarga, sino saborearla y asegurarnos de que no la volveremos a tener». «Sinceramente, no aparecimos. No jugamos tan bien como sabemos que podemos hacerlo. Empezamos bien y ellos consiguieron el gol con su único disparo a puerta. Después de marcar, no controlamos el juego ni dominamos como queríamos». «Tuvimos la mayor parte de la posesión del balón, pero ellos se defendieron bien y no creamos suficientes ocasiones importantes. Nos estamos acercando y tenemos que tener el deseo de volver el año que viene y mejorar. La única manera de conseguir evolución en tu equipo es trabajar más y mejor».

LIGA DE CAMPEONES. La próxima gran cita del fútbol europeo de clubes es la final inglesa de la Liga de Campeones del sábado entre el Manchester City y el Chelsea en Oporto (Portugal). Menos de dos semanas después, la aplazada fase final de la Eurocopa 2020 arrancará en Roma.

History for Villarreal after Europa League shootout drama

LONDON, May 27, 2021.- Argentinian goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was the hero as Villarreal won the first major trophy in their 98-year history.

Spanish football’s Yellow Submarine out-shot Manchester United 11-10 on penalties after an underwhelming 1-1 extra-time draw in the Europa League Final in Gdansk in front of a pandemic-restricted 10,000 attendance.

LACK OF INVENTION. Villarreal took a first-half lead against the run of play through Gerard Moreno then conceded a second-half equaliser to Edinson Cavani. The two teams created only a handful of chances between them with United particularly disappointing in their lack of invention.

TERRIFIC PENALTIES. The penalty shootout was a class above the rest of the match with all the remaining players rattling away their kicks until it came down to a direct duel between the goalkeepers. Rulli thumped his own kick past David de Gea then the Argentinian swapped places to save from his opposite number.

BITTER TASTE. At one point United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might have considered the season a relative success after lifting his team to second in the league. Instead the Super League fiasco plus this defeat will leave a bitter taste.

Quite the reverse for opposite number Unai Emery.

ULTIMATE REWARD. This was Emery’s fourth success in the competition after his previous three with Sevilla. Along the way he also gained the satisfaction of seeing off Arsenal, who had sacked him, in the semi-finals. The ultimate reward for coach and players was the first major trophy in Villarreal’s history. By contrast with Emery this was only Solskjaer’s second final in his managerial career, having won the 2013 Norwegian Cup with Molde.

EMERY. Emery said: “My fourth Europa League success is no secret. It is all about work. Nothing else. For example in the last week I have analysed 17 United games. Then the players have shown great character throughout not only the competition in general but also in the final. They have been fabulous. “As for the penalties, we did not practise or rehearse them. It is something which happens in the moment, that’s all. In the end it turned out well for us”.

SOLSKJAER. United manager Solskjaer said: “That’s football for you. Sometimes it’s decided on one kick – and that’s the difference between winning and losing. We have to learn from that one, not savour this feeling but taste this feeling and make sure we don’t get it again.

“Honestly, we didn’t turn up. We didn’t play as well as we know we can. We started all right and they got the goal with their only shot on target. Then, after we scored we didn’t control the game or dominate as we wanted.

“We had the majority of possession but they defended well and we didn’t create enough big chances. We are getting closer and we have to have the desire to come back next year and improve. The only way to get the margins your side is to work harder and better”.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. Next big date for European club football is Saturday’s all-English Champions League Final between Manchester City and Chelsea and Porto. Less than two weeks further on and the postponed Euro 2020 finals are scheduled to kick off in Rome.
