BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 6 de enero de 2019.- La Asociación Internacional de Juegos Mundiales (AWGA) por sus siglas en inglés ya tiene abierto el proceso de votación del Atleta de Año 2018. La lista está conformada por 25 deportistas y/o equipos, en la cual aparecen cinco del continente americano, tres norteamericanos, una colombiana y un equipo estadounidense. Los aficionados deportivos, serán los encargados de escoger al ganador, mediante votos públicos a través de la página web https://www.theworldgames.org/awards/Athlete-of-the-Year-2018-58. El proceso constará de dos fases y los 10 primeros pasarán a la segunda ronda la cual empezará el 15 de enero. Cada atleta podrá recibir un voto diario por persona, hasta el 31 de enero cuando ce cerrarán las votaciones.

Dominique Fontenette – Estados Unidos (Disco Volador). Tiene 43 años y llevas más de dos décadas destacándose como atleta. El año anterior, logró su sexto título del World Ultimate Club Championships. Fue además la ganadora de un título nacional y del Callahan Award, premio otorgado a los jugadores más valiosos en la universidad, donde se premia además de su habilidad y su parte atlética, el éxito en el campo, los ganadores del Premio Callahan también demuestran una destacada deportividad, liderazgo y dedicación al Ultimate.

Jennifer Thompson – Estados Unidos (Levantamiento de Pesas). Obtuvo el título mundial en el Classic Powerlifting en la categoría 63kg.  Comenzó su carrera deportiva en 1999. En la actualidad tiene cuatro títulos de la Federación Internacional de Levantamiento de Pesas IPF, por sus siglas en inglés en Equipped Bench Press, 2 títulos IPF del Classic Bench Press, 4 títulos IPF del Classic Powerlifting, 1 IPF del Master Bench Press y 1 IPF del Masters Powerlifting y hasta el momento ha batido el record mundial en Press Bench y del total combinado 68 veces.

Maximiliano Ulloa – Estados Unidos (Para Ju-Jitsu). Es el actual Campeón Mundial y Para-Panamericano de este deporte que además de ser para muchos una ayuda en defensa personal, para Maximiliano se convirtió en su estilo de vida y un método terapéutico para tratar su parálisis. Antes de su primer accidente, ya contaba con más de 10 años de experiencia deportiva en Artes Marciales y hoy después de más de 8 años practicando el Ju-Jitsu, tanto en convencional como en deporte adaptado, es cinturón morado. 

Sara López – Colombia (Arco Compuesto). La colombiana de 23 años, logró en 2018 su cuarto título de la Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, ya lo había hecho en 2014, 2015 y 2017, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer en ganar cuatro ediciones del circuito. Aunque Sara terminó en la segunda posición del ranking, fue imbatible en competencias internacionales en esta temporada, ganando también las medallas de oro de las paradas mundiales de Shanghái y Salt Lake City. Pero, además, sumó las medallas de oro del Campeonato Panamericano, de los Juegos Suramericanos y de los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe.

Equipo Masculino – Estados Unidos (Lacrosse). Terminó como campeón invito del Campeonato Mundial con un record de 7-0 y además registró un dramático 9-8 en los últimos segundos, frente a Canadá, su eterno rival, para así lograr el título. En total, compitieron 46 equipos y los estadounidenses aportaron cuatro jugadores para el equipo ideal, además el jugador más valioso fue Michael Ehrhardt. Con esto, Estados Unidos sumó su décimo campeonato mundial.

Four athletes and one team from the Americas, nominated for the IWGA Athlete of the Year

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, January 6, 2019.- The International World Games Association (AWGA) has already opened the voting process for the Athlete of the Year 2018. The list is made up of 25 athletes and / or teams, in which five from the American continent are shortlisted, three North Americans, one Colombian and one North American team. Sports fans will be responsible for choosing the winner, by public votes through the website https://www.theworldgames.org/awards/Athlete-of-the-Year-2018-58. The process will consist of two stages and the first 10 will go through to the second round, which will begin on January 15. Each athlete can receive a daily vote per person, until January 31 when the voting will close.

Dominique Fontenette – United States (flying Disc). She is 43 years old and has been and outstanding athlete for more than two decades. The previous year, she achieved her sixth World Ultimate Club Championships title. She also got a national title and the Callahan Award, a prize awarded to the most valuable players in college ultimate, where among to the ability and athletic performance, the success in the field is taking into account, the winners of the Callahan Award also demonstrate an outstanding sportsmanship, leadership and dedication to Ultimate.

Jennifer Thompson – United States (Weightlifting). She won the world title in the Classic Powerlifting 63kg category. She started her career in 1999. Currently she has four International Weightlifting Federation -IPF titles in Equipped Bench Press, 2 Classic Bench Press IPF titles, 4 Classic Powerlifting IPF titles, 1 Master Bench Press IPF and 1 Masters Powerlifting and so far has beaten the world record in Press Bench and total combined, 68 times.

Maximiliano Ulloa – United States (For Ju-Jitsu). He is the current World and Para-Pan American Champion of this sport, which a part of being a personal defense help for many, for Maximiliano became his way of life and a therapeutic method to treat his paralysis. Before his first accident, he already had more than 10 years of sports experience in Martial Arts and today, after more than 8 years practicing Ju-Jitsu, both in conventional and adapted, he is a purple belt.

Sara López – Colombia (Compound Archery). The 23-year-old Colombian, achieved in 2018 her fourth Hyundai Archery World Cup Final title, she had already won the events in 2014, 2015 and 2017, becoming the first woman to win four editions of the circuit. Although, Sara finished second in the ranking, she was unbeatable at international competitions this season, also winning the gold medals at the Hyundai Archery World Cup stage in Shanghai and Salt Lake City. But, in addition, she added the Pan-American Championship, the South American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games gold medals.

Men’s Team – United States (Lacrosse). The team finished as a World Championship winner with a 7-0 record and also had a stunning come-back in the last seconds of the final to end the match 9-8 against Canada, their eternal opponent, to achieve the title. In total, 46 teams competed, and the North Americans contributed with four players to All-World Team, in addition the most valuable player was Michael Ehrhardt. This is the United States tenth world championship.
