ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, 8 de abril de 2021.– El esgrimista Rodolfo Da Ponte, el primer atleta paraguayo que representó al país en unos Juegos Olímpicos, falleció el 6 de abril a los 82 años, luego de batallar durante dos semanas contra el coronavirus.

Rodolfo Da Ponte, quien marcó la historia del deporte paraguayo cuando participó en la edición de México 1968, nació el 26 de noviembre de 1938. De origen italiano y de familia de deportistas, pues abuelo, padre e hijo practicaron la esgrima, Rodolfo fue campeón invicto sudamericano en Argentina, razón por la cual lo designaron para portar la bandera paraguaya en la inauguración del evento deportivo más importante del mundo.

Rodolfo estaba para escribir su nombre en la historia del deporte paraguayo, muy a pesar que no estaba en la lista de participantes de los mencionados Juegos, pero la eliminación de la selección de fútbol y la renuncia del equipo de remo, cambiaron sus planes. México había enviado una invitación especial, con pasajes y estadía en la Villa Olímpica, para que Paraguay participara en los Juegos Olímpicos por primera vez, y fue así como el Consejo Nacional de Deportes, no existiendo aun Comité Olímpico, realizó su nombramiento. Rodolfo logró llegar a la inauguración el mismo día junto a su padre Rodolfo Ítalo como entrenador y único acompañante.

MÉXICO 1968

Luego de una larga travesía, Rodolfo llegó a México y al siguiente día comenzó su participación, quedando eliminado en la primera ronda. Disputó cinco enfrentamientos, logrando 11 tocados a favor y 25 en contra que lo ubicaron en el último lugar de su grupo, en el que estaba, entre otros, Daniel Revenu, el francés ganador de seis medallas olímpicas.

DATOS

Su abuelo, quien llegó de Italia, fue el primer instructor de este deporte, su padre siguió con esa herencia y de ahí nació su amor por la esgrima, además su padre fue quien lo formó como deportista, luego, Rodolfo se convirtió también en entrenador.

Fue homenajeado como ciudadano ilustre de la ciudad de Asunción.

El salón principal de la primera Casa Olímpica del barrio Los Laureles fue bautizado con su nombre.

Rodolfo tuvo que confeccionar “a la carrera” el logotipo, el sello y el membrete del que hasta 1970 no sería oficialmente el Comité Olímpico Paraguayo.

RODOLFO DA PONTE, THE FIRST PARAGUAYAN OLYMPIC ATHLETE DIED AFTER BATTLE AGAINST COVID-19

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, April 8, 2021.- The fencer Rodolfo Da Ponte, the first Paraguayan athlete to represent the country in the Olympic Games, died on April 6, at the age of 82, after battling for two weeks against the coronavirus.

Rodolfo Da Ponte, who marked the history of Paraguayan sport when participated in Mexico 1968 edition, was born on November 26, 1938. Of Italian origin and a family of athletes, as grandfather, father and son practiced fencing, Rodolfo was a South American undefeated champion in Argentina, which led him to be appointed to carry the Paraguayan flag in opening ceremony of the most important sporting event in the world.

Rodolfo was there to write his name in the history of Paraguayan sport, despite the fact that he was not on the list of participants in the aforementioned games, but the elimination of the football team and the withdraw of the rowing team changed his plans. Mexico had sent a special invitation, with tickets and a room in the Olympic Village, for Paraguay to participate in the Olympic Games for the first time, and that was how the National Sports Council, the now Olympic Committee, made its appointment. Rodolfo managed to arrive at the opening ceremony the same day along with his father Rodolfo Ítalo who was his coach and only companion.

MEXICO 1968

After a long journey, Rodolfo arrived in Mexico and the next day his participation began, being eliminated in the first round. He played five matches, with 11 touches in favor and 25 against, which located him in the last place of his group, in which was, among others, Daniel Revenu, the French winner of six Olympic medals.

FACTS

His grandfather, who came from Italy, was the first coach of this sport, his father continued with that heritage and from there his love for fencing was born, in addition his father was the one who trained him as an athlete, then Rodolfo also became a coach.

He was honored as an illustrious citizen of the city of Asunción.

The main hall of the first Olympic House in Los Laureles neighborhood was named after him. Rodolfo had to make «at last minute» the logo, the seal and the letterhead of what until 1970 would not be officially the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.
