SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, 5 de marzo de 2020.- Los atletas de todo el continente americano ahora pueden comenzar a planificar su viaje y preparación técnica del próximo ciclo olímpico siguiendo la definición de los deportes que se incluirán en los Juegos Panamericanos Santiago 2023 por el Comité Ejecutivo de Panam Sports.
Los líderes del Movimiento Olímpico de las Américas se juntaron para su primera reunión del año en el Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico, recibidos por la presidenta Sara Rosario, para una productiva semana de discusiones.
Entre los muchos temas sobre el futuro del deporte en la región, podría decirse que el más importante fue el debate sobre qué deportes se incluirán en el gran evento de Santiago 2023.
Se prestó mucha atención a los méritos, beneficios y dificultades de cada deporte en el programa deportivo y aquellos que han encontrado nuevos puntos de apoyo en el Movimiento Olímpico gracias al enfoque innovador de la Agenda Olímpica 2020.
Siguiendo los pasos del COI, Panam Sports ha tomado la difícil decisión de maximizar los recursos de cada nación anfitriona, aprobando el programa deportivo de Santiago 2023 basado en las realidades y desafíos de Chile. De acuerdo con la Agenda Olímpica 2020, los Juegos no deberían requerir una inversión significativa en recursos e infraestructura que no cumplan con las capacidades sostenibles de la Ciudad Anfitriona.
El Comité Ejecutivo escuchó la presentación de Santiago 2023 antes de mantener un largo debate centrado en las propuestas ofrecidas por el Comité Organizador liderado por su presidenta y Ministra del Deporte de ese país, Cecilia Pérez.
Los deportes aprobados para los Juegos Panamericanos 2023 por el Comité Ejecutivo de Panam Sports fueron los siguientes:
Atletismo, Badminton, Baloncesto, Balonmano, Béisbol-Sóftbol, Boxeo, Canotaje, Ciclismo, Ecuestre, Esgrima, Esquí Náutico, Fútbol, Gimnasia, Golf, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Levantamiento de Pesas, Lucha, Natación, Pentatlón Moderno, Remo, Rugby Siete, Roller Sports (Patinaje Artístico, Patín Carrera y Skateboard), Surf, Taekwondo, Tenis, Tenis de mesa, Tiro, Tiro con arco, Triatlón, Vela, y Voleibol.
Cabe señalar, que existen otros deportes que podrían ser incluidos en esta lista y que entrarán en un proceso de estudio por parte de Panam Sports.
Estos podrían ser incluidos siempre y cuando se pueda contar con infraestructura de calidad, y que esto no signifique mayor inversión a la ciudad sede. Se abre esta posibilidad para así, no perjudicar a los atletas que añoran con participar en los Juegos Panamericanos en la capital chilena.
La decisión final de incluir estos deportes se tomará en el próximo Comité Ejecutivo de Panam Sports a realizarse la primera semana de junio en Cali, Colombia.

PANAM SPORTS DEFINES SANTIAGO 2023 PAN AMERICAN GAMES SPORT PROGRAM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 5, 2020).- Athletes throughout the Americas can now begin to plan their journey through the next Olympic cycle following the definition of the sports that will be included in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games by the Panam Sports Executive Committee.
The leaders of Americas’ Olympic Movement united for their first meeting of the year at the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee, welcomed by President Sara Rosario for a productive week of discussions.
Among the many topics regarding the future of sport in the region, arguably the most important was the debate about which sports will be included in the Pan American Games of Santiago 2023.
Much consideration was given to the merits, benefits and difficulties of each sport currently on the sport program and those sports which have found new footholds in the Olympic Movement thanks to the innovative approach of Olympic Agenda 2020.
Following in the footsteps of the IOC, Panam Sports has taken the very difficult decision to maximize the resources of each Host Nation, approving the sport program of Santiago 2023 based on the realities and challenges of Chile. In accordance with Olympic Agenda 2020, Games should not require significant investment in resources and infrastructure that do not comply within the sustainable capabilities of the Host City.
The Executive Committee listened to the presentation of Santiago 2023 before holding a lengthy debate focused on the proposals offered by the Organizing Committee led by its President, Chilean Sports Minister Cecilia Perez.
The sports approved for the 2023 Pan American Games by the Executive Committee of Panam Sports were the following:
Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Basketball, Boxing, Canoe, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Modern Pentathlon, Roller Sports (Artistic Skating, Speed Skating and Skateboarding), Rowing, Rugby Sevens, Sailing, Soccer, Sport Shooting, Surfing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Water Skiing, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Volleyball.
It should be noted that there are other sports that could be included in this list following a study conducted by Panam Sports.
These sports could be included as long as quality infrastructure could be guaranteed without significant additional investment by the Host City. This keeps the possibility open to protect the aspirations of athletes who dream of competing in the Pan American Games in the Chilean capital.
The final decision to include these sports will be taken at the next Panam Sports Executive Committee meeting that will be held in Cali, Colombia in the first week of June.–
