MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, 24 de marzo de 2020.- La crisis mundial que afecta a los 5 continentes debido a la pandemia del Covid-19 con especial gravedad en Asia, Europa y ahora Estados Unidos, llevó al gobierno de Japón – por intermedio de su primer ministro Shinzo Abe -, a comunicar al Comité Olímpico Internacional su decisión de aplazar los Juegos Olímpicos de Tolio para el año 2021. Finalmente la comunicación oficial fue conjunta entre el gobierno japonés y el COI.

Varios Comités Olímpicos se habían expresado en forma pública sobre la inconveniencia de mantener la fecha original ante la crisis de salud, amenazando no enviar a sus atletas. Tal el caso de los CON´s de Noruega, Alemania, Canadá, Australia y especialmente el de Estados Unidos. Algunas voces como la de Dick Pound se habían manifestado en contra de mantener la agenda.

El COI había anunciado que se tomaría cuatro semanas para decidir y sin embargo en 24 horas tuvo que ceder ante la presión de la comunidad deportiva internacional y terminó por aceptar la prórroga. Basta recordar que 7 días atrás la organización olímpica comunicó que “no hay necesidad de tomar decisiones drásticas en esta etapa”.

En América Panam Sports – colectivo que agrupa a 41 CON´s – se expresó sobre la situación en una comunicación oficial que podrá leerse en el enlace final.

Fuimos a consultar a su Presidente, el Ing. Neven Ilic, sobre varios temas relacionados con la decisión de aplazamiento de los Juegos y nos comentó:

“Cada día se hacía más lógico la postergación de la fecha por razones de salud en el mundo. Se toma la decisión ante la información de la OMS debido a que la pandemia no decrece y no está bajo control, la decisión lógica era aplazar. Todas las actividades deportivas del año que viene y las de este año que no se han hecho, nos obligan a que tengamos que formalizar un nuevo calendario. La fecha nueva de los JJOO no está determinada aún. Es un trabajo serio que habrá que hacer. Debemos además retornar la actividad de los atletas y deportistas.

Nosotros estamos bajo los lineamientos del COI. Este resolvió tomar un tiempo para la decisión final, nos pareció adecuado y prudente. En nuestro continente nos consta se hace muy difícil resolver cuando recomenzar la actividad y recibimos la decisión de aplazamiento con alivio y optimismo. A la vista de los sucesos no podemos estimar cuando deben salir de sus casas los atletas y sus entrenadores no lo podemos afirmar. Es un proceso nuevo, inédito y que precisa trabajo y compromiso. Vamos a trabajar en recuperar el nivel deportivo de cada uno de los actores que estarán en los JJOO. Vamos a ayudar a los Comités Olímpicos en ese camino.

Por otra parte vamos a dar el 100% de prioridad a la participación de los atletas americanos en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. Ese es el objetivo. Pero no vamos a dejar de lado nuestros Juegos Panamericanos Junior. Cuando tengamos la fecha de Tokio, veremos cómo encauzamos los Panamericanos Junior de Cali 2021, debido a que son muy relevantes para el desarrollo de nuestro deporte y para nuestra organización Panam Sports.

Hemos podido conversar con todos los miembros del Comité Ejecutivo de Panam Sports, con todos nuestros Comités Olímpicos. Ha sido una constante la comunicación con toda la organización en forma transversal. Hemos procurado acompañar este proceso de resguardo por la salud de todos y cada uno, esto es lo que nos ocupa. Ellos tienen la preocupación de poder salir de sus casas y prepararse para lo que viene. Nosotros hemos tratado de interactuar y transmitir la responsabilidad de las decisiones que cada uno debe afrontar. Las interacciones han sido productivas, ellos sienten el apoyo de la organización. Saben que decisiones se han tomado y como.

Lo que viene es la prórroga de toda la actividad por un año, es un proceso que debemos atender y entender aportando trabajo en equipo, recursos y presencia”.​

The logical decision was to postpone the Olympics​

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, March 24, 2020.- The world crisis that affects the 5 continents due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with special gravity in Asia, Europe and now the United States, led the government of Japan – through its Prime Minister Shinzo Abe – to communicate to the Olympic Committee International its decision to postpone the Tolio Olympics by 2021. Finally the official communication was joint between the Japanese government and the IOC.

Several Olympic Committees had spoken publicly about the inconvenience of keeping the original date in the face of the health crisis, threatening not to send their athletes. Such is the case of the NOCs of Norway, Germany, Canada, Australia and especially that of the United States. Some voices like Dick Pound’s had spoken out against keeping the agenda.

The IOC had announced that it was going to take four weeks for a decision and yet resolved it within 24 hours. It is enough to remember that 7 days ago, the Olympic organization had announced «there is no need to make drastic decisions at this stage».

He had to give in, under pressure from the international sports community and ended up accepting the postponement.

Panam Sports, which groups 41 CONs, expressed itself about the situation in an official communication that can be read in the final link.

We went to consult the President of Panam Sports, Eng. Neven Ilic, on various topics related to the decision to postpone the Games and he told us:

“Every day the postponement of the date became more logical for health reasons in the world. The decision is made based on information from the WHO because the pandemic does not decrease and is not under control, the logical decision was to postpone. All the sports activities for next year and those for this year that have not been carried out, force us to have to formalize a new calendar. The new date for the Olympics has not been determined yet. It is serious work to be done. We must also return the activity of athletes.

We are under the guidelines of the IOC. This resolved to take time for the final decision, it seemed appropriate and prudent. In our continent we know that it is very difficult to resolve when to restart the activity and we receive the postponement decision with relief and optimism. In view of the events, we cannot estimate when the athletes and their coaches should leave their homes, we cannot say. It is a new, unprecedented process that requires work and commitment. We are going to work on recovering the sport level of each one of the actors that will be in the Olympics. We are going to help the Olympic Committees on that path.

On the other hand, we are going to give 100% priority to the participation of American athletes in the Tokyo Olympics. That is the objective. But we are not going to leave out our Junior Pan American Games. When we have the Tokyo date, we will see how we channel the Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games, because they are very relevant for the development of our sport and for our organization Panam Sports.

We have been able to talk with all the members of the Executive Committee of Panam Sports, with all our Olympic Committees. Communication with the entire organization has been constant across the board. We have tried to accompany this process of safeguarding the health of each and every one, this is what concerns us. They have the concern of being able to leave their houses and prepare for what is to come. We have tried to interact and transmit responsibility for the decisions that each one must face. The interactions have been productive; they feel the support of the organization. They know what decisions have been made and how.

What comes is the extension of all the activity for a year, it is a process that we must attend to and understand, providing teamwork, resources and presence”.​
