BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 10 de marzo de 2020.- Los días pasan y el fin del aislamiento y la cuarenta se ve cada vez más lejos. En Colombia, como seguramente en todos los países del continente americano, los noticieros dedican un buen tiempo de sus emisiones a mostrar lo que pasa en Europa con relación al Covid-19 y muchos pensamos que si allá, en países de primer mundo, el fin aún no se ve, por acá muchos menos.

Y si, es que nunca imaginamos que la situación sería tan difícil, y que duraríamos muchas semanas en casa, sin trabajar, sin producir, pero con los gastos y las deudas creciendo. Debo admitir que durante muchos días no fui consciente de esto, -pues soy de las personas afortunadas en mantener mi trabajo desde casa-, hasta que, teniendo, como muchos, bastante tiempo para estar revisando las redes sociales de decenas de contactos, me encontré con publicaciones de colegas que me hicieron ver la triste y cruda realidad por la que atraviesan muchos de los Periodistas Deportivos de mi país, un país en el que ser Periodista de Deportes es ‘una afición’, en el que solo unos pocos medios, especialmente de la televisión o la prensa escrita impresa pagan salarios a quienes hacen realmente Periodismo Deportivo, y no muy buenos por cierto, comparado con lo que le pagan a un presentador, que generalmente no sale a hacer trabajo de campo, o a un ex futbolista, que tras el retiro lo llevan a ‘analizar’ partidos de fútbol o a participar en programas, si, a los futbolistas, porque en realidad no conozco que a un atleta de otro deporte le paguen tantos millones de pesos por hablar ante las cámaras o en una emisora.

Ese mismo mundo, el de la radio, es el que más se ha afectado en este momento en Colombia, pues ante la poca posibilidad de conseguir un trabajo estable en otros medios de comunicación, muchos periodistas decidieron dedicarse a trabajar en radio, bueno trabajar es un decir, porque en el concepto básico, una persona trabaja y a cambio recibe un pago; bueno en este país en el mundo radial es todo lo contrario, el Periodista debe pagar para poder trabajar, así, tal cual, por ejemplo, hay emisoras que alquilan los espacios a los Periodistas para que emitan sus programas deportivos, pero deben pagar por usar la frecuencia, esto ha llevado a que los Periodistas se conviertan en vendedores de pauta publicitaria, así, con lo que paga un cliente, se saca para pagar el espacio radial y si queda algo, eso será su sueldo. Esto también pasa en medios pequeños de televisión y en algunas publicaciones impresas. En el caso de las páginas web, el medio nació así y así ha seguido, decenas y decenas de personas que han encontrado en las web, su medio de subsistencia, deben vender publicidad para poder mantenerse.

LA PREOCUPACIÓN DE LOS COLEGAS

PERIODISTAS INDEPENDIENTES CON UNA REALIDAD INOCULTABLE, así tituló Silvio Zamora, Periodista Deportivo de Acord Colombia, el mensaje que envió por un grupo de WhatsApp, en el que escribió: «esa situación preocupa a los colombianos (la cuarentena); también la crisis económica que se perfila que lastimará de gran manera a nuestro país y especialmente a la mayoría de trabajadores independientes. En esa población independiente, se encuentra un amplio volumen de periodistas sin canon de salario fijo; pues su remuneración depende de las pautas de publicidad que negocie, pero ellos contribuyen ampliamente en el desarrollo del país, desempeñan una labor social permanente, siendo los verdaderos ‘INFLUENCER’, palabra tan de moda en los últimos tiempos. Los periodistas independientes quienes ya venían evidenciando cierta crisis a través del formato laboral en el que trabajan; unos comprando sus espacios a empresas de comunicación, otros, remunerados con cupos de publicidad; ahora con la actual realidad que vive el país y su estancamiento económico, les avecina una situación calamitosa inocultable. El Estado deberá dar una mirada de apoyo a esta población, valorando el gran servicio y función social que presta al país con esfuerzo propio. El amor y pasión por su profesión hace que muchos periodistas independientes, quienes desempeñan su función con dignidad, alteza y vocación de servicio, antepongan su ejercicio de hacer periodismo sobre los escasos ingresos económicos que perciben. Una realidad que no se puede ocultar».

En otro mensaje, el mismo Silvio Zamora expresó:

«CRISIS ECONÓMICA OBLIGARÍA CIERRE DE AL MENOS DIEZ PROGRAMAS DEPORTIVOS EN CALI. Al menos diez programas de radio en Cali cerrarían sus espacios ante la imposibilidad de pago de la mensualidad a emisoras concesionarias. La baja en venta de publicidad obligaría la decisión. Se callarían por lo menos cien periodistas independientes que laboran en estos programas, quienes le sirven al deporte, brindan a través de la radio información, recreación y esparcimiento a la comunidad que se encuentra en cuarentena. Empresas concesionarias de programas de radio deberían contribuir con la crisis, congelando contratos de manera parcial y permitir que los programas al aire de concesionarios no paren y puedan seguir haciendo función social. Un apoyo gubernamental también evitaría el cierre y el silencio obligado de periodistas que prestan una labor social muy importante a la comunidad».

Otro de los escritos que me llamó la atención, fue compartido en Facebook, infortunadamente, no tenía el nombre de quien lo escribió.

SOY PERIODISTA Y EL COVID-19 INFECTÓ MI TRABAJO

«Cancelaron todo tipo de contacto con la gente, mi trabajo se ve afectado por miedo y por seguridad. A los Periodistas suelen contratarnos sin beneficios, no ganamos primas, ni aguinaldo, mucho menos recibimos ayuda del gobierno, pagamos nuestros aportes a la seguridad social porque es la única manera de que quienes nos contratan nos paguen. Trabajamos sin horarios y sin quejarnos porque es nuestro día a día y la razón de ser de nuestra profesión. Pero un día, cuando parece que se estabiliza tu vida, que hay trabajo para decenas de camarógrafos, editores, realizadores audiovisuales y tienes tranquilidad, logras pagar las cuentas, haciendo lo que más te apasiona, de repente el mundo se ‘infecta de #Coronavirus’ y todo queda #cancelado. A todos nos llegó como balde de agua fría en la espalda… y ahora tengo muchas dudas ¿Qué pasará? ¿Cuánto durará? ¿Qué haremos? ¿Cuánto aguantaremos? ¿Cómo pagaremos las deudas? Tengo miedo, pero no queda más que seguir adelante, proteger a nuestras familias en casa para que esto del COVID-19 no avance más. Si eres periodista o Realizador Audiovisual trabajador independiente, sin importar de qué manera te rebusques a diario, copia y pega… Con afecto para nuestras autoridades, que no han generado políticas adecuadas para que la labor tenga los beneficios que tienen algunos en otros sectores. Dios los bendiga a todos y Dios quiera que esto termine pronto.

UNCERTAINTY SEIZES SPORTS JOURNALISTS IN COLOMBIA

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, March 10, 2020.- Days pass and the end of isolation and the quarantine are seen further and further away. In Colombia, as surely in all the countries in the American continent, the news programs dedicates a considerable time of their broadcasts to show what happens in Europe in relation to Covid-19, and many of us think that if there, in the first world countries the end is not near, here even much less.

And yes, we never though that the situation would be so difficult, and that we would be so many weeks at home, without working, without producing, but with expenses and debts growing. I must admit that for many days I was not aware of this, -I am one of the lucky people to keep my job and to work from home-, until, having like many of us, enough time to check the social networks of dozens of contacts, I found myself with posts by colleagues that made me see the sad and harsh reality that many of the Sports Journalists in my country go through now, a country in which being a Sports Journalist is ‘a hobby’, in which only a few media, especially TV or print media pay salaries to those who actually do Sports Journalism, and not very good pay by the way, compared to what they pay to a presenter, who usually does not go out to do field, or to a former footballer, who after retirement they take to ‘analyse’ football matches or participate in programs, yes, footballers, because in reality I do not know that an athlete from another sport is paid so many millions of pesos for speaking on camera or on a radio station.

That same media, the one about radio, is the one that has been most affected at this time in Colombia; because by the low possibility of getting a stable job in other media, many journalists decided to dedicate themselves to work on radio stations, well, working is a saying, because in the basic concept, a person works and in return receives a payment; well in this country in the radio world this is the opposite, the journalist must pay to be able to work, for example, there are stations that rent the ‘on air time’ to journalists to broadcast their sports programs, so, they must pay to use the frequency, this has led the Journalists to become salesmen of advertising, thus, with what a client pays, they take out to pay for the radio station and if there is anything left, that will be their salary. This also happens in small television media and in some printed publications companies. In the case of web pages, the media here was born like this and has developed like this, dozens and dozens of people who have found their means of living thanks to the web, must sell advertisement in order to stay on.

THE CONCERN OF COLLEAGUES

FREELANCE JOURNALISTS WITH A REALITY THAT CANNOT BE HIDE, that is how Silvio Zamora, Sports Journalist from Acord Colombia, titled the message he sent in a WhatsApp group, in which he wrote: «that situation worries Colombians (the quarantine); also the economic crisis that will greatly harm our country and especially the majority of freelance workers. In that independent population, there is a large volume of journalists without a fixed wage rate; since their payment depends on the advertisement guidelines that they negotiate, but they contribute widely in the development of the country, they carry out a permanent social work, being the true ‘INFLUENCER’, such a fashionable word in recent times. The freelance journalists who were already facing a certain crisis through the labour format in which they work; some buying their ‘on air’ time from media companies, others, being paid with advertising quotas; now with the current reality of the country and its economic stagnation, an undeniable dire situation emerges. The government must take a look of support for this population, valuing the great service and social role it provides to the country with its own effort. The love and passion for their profession makes that many freelance journalists, who carry out their role with dignity, highness and service vocation, put their journalism work above the low economic income they receive. A reality that cannot be hide».

In another message, Silvio Zamora also expressed:

«ECONOMIC CRISIS WOULD CLOSE AT LEAST TEN SPORTS PROGRAMS IN CALI. At least ten radio programs in Cali would close due to the almost impossible option of paying the monthly payment to media radio stations companies. The drop in advertising sales would force the decision. At least a hundred freelance journalists who work in these programs, who serve the sport, provide information, and entertainment to the community in quarantined through the radio will be silenced. Radio companies should contribute during the crisis, by partially freezing contracts and allowing paid programs to carry on, to not stop and continue with its social role. A Government support would also prevent the closure and forced silence of journalists who provide very important social work to the community».

Another of the writings that caught my attention was shared on Facebook, unfortunately, it did not have the name of the person who wrote it.

I’M A JOURNALIST AND COVID-19 INFECTED MY WORK

«All kind of contact with people is cancelled; my work is affected by fear and for security. Journalists are often hiring without benefits, we do not earn bonuses or extra payment at the end of the year, nor even less we receive government help, we pay our social security because it is the only way that those who hire us pay us. We work without schedules and without complaining because it is our day to day and the reason of our profession. But one day, when it seems that your life is become stable, that there is work for dozens of cameramen, editors, audio-visual directors and you have peace of mind, you manage to pay the bills, doing what you are most passionate about, suddenly the world is ‘infected with #Coronavirus’ and everything is #cancelled. It came to all of us like a bucket of cold water on our backs … and now I have many doubts. What will happen? How long will it last? What will we do? How long will we hold? How will we pay the debts? I am afraid, but there is nothing more to do than to move forward, protect our families at home so this COVID-19 does not go any further. If you are a freelance journalist or audio-visual producer, no matter how you dig through your days, copy and paste … Sincerely, with love to our authorities, who have not made suitable policies for our work to have the benefits that some other professions have.
