MEDELLÍN, Colombia 28 de agosto de 2017. – Medellín se llenó de baloncesto, el coliseo Iván de Bedout vibró con la que ha sido la participación más importante de Colombia en un evento continental de baloncesto masculino en los últimos años, pero con el tinte especial de ser anfitriones… y aunque no se logró el primer lugar en el Grupo A de esta AmericCup 2017, la selección dejó una buena sensación en cuanto a desempeño deportivo entre los asistentes y amantes de este deporte en el país. No es un secreto que la selección cafetero nunca ha sido la favorita y por el contrario muchas veces es tratada como el rival “débil”, sin embargo poco a poco aunque con algunas limitantes latentes en el deporte colombiano en general, los mismos jugadores han ido creyendo en su potencial y eso lo demostraron en este torneo en el que recibieron en la calurosa Medellín a las selecciones de Brasil, México y Puerto Rico conformando el Grupo A. Tomás Díaz, el asistente técnico expresó “nuestro trabajo generó ganancia desde todo punto de vista, siendo esta la primera vez que participamos en este torneo, así que ya dimos un paso, ahora lo que tenemos que hacer es luchar por conseguir el siguiente paso, que es clasificar a la segunda ronda y poder escalar posiciones a nivel internacional, el trabajo definitivamente fue muy positivo”

Ser anfitriones les daba una gran responsabilidad y no estuvieron muy lejos de su propósito, debutaron contra BRASIL, equipo que llegó con Cesar Guidetti como nuevo entrenador y con la ilusión puesta en un equipo joven. Su participación estuvo en duda por inconvenientes federativos que llevaron a su suspensión dentro de FIBA, la cual fue levantada antes del torneo y llegaron a Colombia con la ilusión de volver a los puestos de honor, pues su nivel en las versiones de Caracas 2013 y Ciudad de México 2015 no le permitió avanzar a la segunda ronda. De sus 12 jugadores, 10 hacen parte del torneo nacional y a ellos se sumaron Bruno Caboclo (Raptors de Toronto) y George de Paula (Rockets de Houston).

COLOMBIA basó su selección en jugadores que participan en la Liga Profesional nacional y quienes ya han tenido experiencia en torneos internacionales como la Liga de la Américas y la Copa Suramericana, pero además tuvo a Juan Diego Tello el jugador más experimentado de la selección quien jugaba en Turquía y volverá a la liga de Lituania al término de esta AmeriCup, además por primera vez en un seleccionado nacional de mayores, se contó con la participación de los jugadores que hacen parte del baloncesto intercolegiado de Estados Unidos, Braian Angola, Tonny Trocha, Hanner Mosquera, Jhan Paul Mejía y Hansel Atencia. “La presencia de los jugadores que vienen de afuera, es algo que en todas la selecciones se utiliza, nosotros tuvimos la fortuna de contar con todos ellos desde la preselección, al final hicieron falta dos en el equipo final pero ellos van a hacer parte del proceso más adelante, pero indiscutiblemente fue muy bueno todo esto que se hizo, el esfuerzo que se está haciendo de parte de la Federación y Coldeportes ya está dando sus frutos” expresó Díaz.

PUERTO RICO igualmente le apostó a la renovación de sus jugadores, bajo el mando de Eddie Cassiano quien previo al inicio manifestó que sería un torneo difícil por la poca experiencia de la mayoría de sus jugadores, pues el equipo tuvo  6 debutantes en la selección mayores.

El juego de cierre de los colombianos fue contra MÉXICO ganador de este Grupo A y además equipo campeón continental en 2013, que llegó como uno de los favoritos a Medellín, el seleccionado manito acostumbrado a ganar y que mostro un buen balance entre mentalidad y deporte ha sido entre otros, medalla de plata en los Juegos Panamericanos de 2011, campeón del Premundial  2013 y campeón del Centrobasket 2014.

THE AMERICUP, A NEW START FOR COLOMBIAN BASKETNBALL

MEDELLÍN, Colombia August 28, 2017. – Medellín was all filled up by basketball, the Iván de Bedout’s coliseum vibrated with what has been the most important continental men’s basketball tournament for Colombia in recent years the AmeriCup, and with the special touch, they were the hosts … but although they did not get the first place in Group A, the National Team left a good feeling in a sport performance terms, among the lovers of this sport in the country. It is not a secret that Colombia has never been a favourite team for winning titles, on the contrary it is often treated as the «weak» rival, however little by little but with the big limitations the Colombian sport has, the same players started believing in their potential and that has been demonstrated in this tournament were Colombia received in the warm city of Medellín the National Teams of Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico. «This event was positive from every point of view, being this the first time we participated in this tournament, so we took a step up, now what we have to do is to work hard to get the next step, which is to qualify for the second round in tournaments like this and to be able to climb positions at international level, the work was definitely very positive». Said Tomás Díaz, Coach Assistant.

Being the hosts gave them a great responsibility and they were not too far from achieving their goal. Their debut was against BRASIL, team that had Cesar Guidetti as a new coach and that came to Medellín with its hope laid on the young players. Their participation was in doubt due to federal inconveniences that led to the suspension of the team within FIBA, but it was taken off before the tournament, so they arrived in Colombia with the illusion of going back to the honoured positions, since its performance in Caracas 2013 and Mexico City 2015 did not allow them to reached the second round. 10 out of 12 players, plays in the local tournament and were joined by Bruno Caboclo from Toronto Raptors and Georginho de Paula from Houston Rockets.

On the other side COLOMBIA also had players that plays in the National Professional League and who have had experience in international tournaments like the Liga de las Américas and the South American Cup, but also they count with Juan Diego Tello the most experienced player of the team, who plays in Europe, finishing the season in Turkey and ready to go back to Lithuania where he already played. For the Colombians it has been a new story, and after all they are optimistic since for the first time in a senior national team, the players who are part of the intercollegiate basketball in the United States, were called, a big step for building the future in this sports, as coach Guillermo Moreno mentioned several times, they were: Braian Angola, Tonny Trocha, Hanner Mosquera, Jhan Paul Mejía and Hansel Atencia. «To have the players that come from international universities is something used in all the national teams, we were so fortunate to have all of them since the beginning, but in the end two of them were not part of the selected 12, however they are not out, they will be part of the process later, but undoubtedly this was very good, all this was done with the effort being made by the Colombian Federation and the Ministry of Sports”.

PUERTO RICO also decide to bet on a new young players under Eddie Cassiano´s coaching, who prior to the competition said that it would be a difficult tournament because of the lack of experience of most of its players, as the team had a total of 6 players who debuted in the Senior National Team. The final score: 91-72 for the Puerto Ricans

The last Colombian game was against MEXICO winner of this Group A and also continental champion in 2013. The Mexicans were the favourites since the beginning because of their good results in this decade and in Medellin they kept the favouritism, showing a good balance between mental and sports skills. This national team is used to win, has been among others silver medal in the Panamerican Games 2011 and Centrobasket 2014 champio.
