MADRID, España, 11 de setiembre de 2020.- “A Spyridon Louis, el primer campeón olímpico de maratón, el rey Jorge I de Grecia le regaló un carruaje tirado por burros para ayudarlo en su negocio de transporte de agua en Atenas”. Esta anécdota es solo una de las muchas que ha elegido Juan Antonio Prieto para su libro “Leyendas olímpicas del atletismo”. Una publicación que resume la vida y los milagros de 75 deportistas. Leyendas que, a lo largo de la historia olímpica moderna, han dejado una huella imborrable en la pista.

Prieto es miembro del Comité Ejecutivo de AIPS (Asociación Internacional de Prensa Deportiva), vicepresidente de la AEPD (Asociación Española de Prensa Deportiva) y comentarista de Televisión Española en cuatro Juegos Olímpicos. Es un apasionado de los deportes, especialmente el atletismo. Su investigación y recopilación de datos, fotografías, portadas de prensa, filatelia y numismática deportiva, le han llevado años de trabajo. El resultado es un libro lleno de anécdotas invaluables; exquisitamente ilustrado y perfecto para ser utilizado como texto de referencia, ya que incluye las estadísticas de victoria de cada uno de los protagonistas. El libro de 469 páginas editado por la Asociación de Periodistas Deportivos de Cantabria, que preside Prieto, está precedido por Sebastian Coe, bicampeón olímpico y actual presidente del Mundial de Atletismo, Federación Internacional de Atletismo. En el prólogo, el cuatro veces medallista olímpico dice: “…es una valoración hecha con exactitud, de las vidas y hechos más relevantes de algunos de los mejores deportistas de la historia. Incluye todas sus marcas y registros, así como múltiples referencias a los sacrificios y anécdotas que formaron o fueron parte activa de la vida de sus protagonistas…”.

En la contraportada del libro hay varias anécdotas de las leyendas del atletismo y las biografías se han complementado con un capítulo que recoge 20 registros históricos y curiosos, así como un ranking olímpico de los protagonistas. Además, hay una dedicatoria manuscrita de Bob Beamon, quien aún mantiene un récord olímpico que se prolonga durante 52 años, en el que dice: “Ustedes se han tomado el maravilloso trabajo de contar la historia de los mejores atletas de todos los tiempos. Sé que los lectores disfrutarán del libro. Con mis mejores deseos”.

Ruth Beitia, campeona olímpica de salto de altura en Río 2016, estuvo presente en la presentación del libro, donde destacó el rigor y cariño con el que se redactó la obra. En unos videos, el presidente de World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, afirmó que “este libro es una magnífica referencia para los jóvenes deportistas”, mientras que el presidente de AIPS, Gianni Merlo, felicitó al autor por “este importante aporte al conocimiento del atletismo”.

AIPS EC member Juan Antonio Prieto chronicles “Olympic Legends of Athletics” in new book

MADRID, Spain, September 11, 2020.- “To Spyridon Louis, the first Olympic marathon champion, King George I of Greece gave a donkey-drawn carriage to help him in his water-carrying business in Athens.” This anecdote is just one of many that Juan Antonio Prieto has chosen for his book “Olympic Legends of Athletics”. A publication that summarizes the lives and miracles of 75 athletes. Legends who, through modern Olympic history, have left an indelible mark on the track.

Prieto is a member of the Executive Committee of the AIPS (International Sports Press Association), vice president of the AEPD (Spanish Sports Press Association) and a commentator for Spanish Television in four Olympic Games. He is passionate about sports, particularly athletics. His research and compilation of data, photos, press-covers, philately and sports numismatics, have taken years of work. The result is a book full of priceless anecdotes; exquisitely illustrated and perfect to be used as a reference text, as it includes the victory statistics of each of the protagonists. In the prologue, the four-time Olympic medallist says: “…it is an evaluation made with exactitude, of the lives and most relevant events of some of the best athletes in history. It includes all their marks and records, as well as multiple references to the sacrifices and anecdotes that formed or were an active part of the lives of its protagonists…”.

On the back cover of the book there are several anecdotes of the athletics legends and the biographies have been complemented with a chapter that collects 20 historical and curious records, as well as an Olympic ranking of the protagonists. In addition, there is a handwritten dedication by Bob Beamon, who still maintains an Olympic record that has lasted for 52 years, in which he says: “You have taken the wonderful job of telling the story of the greatest athletes of all time. I know readers will thankfully enjoy the book. With my best wishes”.

Ruth Beitia, the Olympic high jump champion at Rio 2016, was present at the book presentation, where she highlighted the rigour and affection with which the work was written. In some videos, the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, stated that “this book is a magnificent reference for young athletes”, while the president of AIPS, Gianni Merlo, congratulated the author for “this important contribution to the knowledge of athletics”.
