SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, 26 de junio de 2019.- A un mes del comienzo de los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima, el Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico (COPUR) eligió mediante votación, al luchador Franklin Gómez como abanderado durante Asamblea Ordinaria. El deportista desfilará en la ceremonia de apertura el 26 de julio en el Estadio Nacional de Lima junto a la delegación puertorriqueña y 40 países, que completan las naciones participantes en las justas de las Américas.

“Ya tenemos el elegido por mayoría de votos en el Comité Olímpico. La delegación de Puerto Rico tiene ya quien portará la bandera a los Juegos Panamericanos a Lima y con sumo gusto y placer anunciamos”, expresó la presidenta del COPUR, Sara Rosario Vélez, con suspenso.

“¿Qué quién portara la bandera? Es quien portará la bandera de Puerto Rico en los Juegos Panamericanos en Lima 2019… Es el honor más grande para un atleta. Hemos tenido excelentes abanderados en los pasados Juegos Panamericanos como lo fue Luis Rivera (Toronto 2015) y quien cargará la bandera en los Juegos Panamericanos por decisión de mayoría es el atleta de lucha olímpica Franklin Gómez”, dijo Rosario Vélez culminando con el dramatismo del anuncio, que arrancó los aplausos de los presentes en el Salón de los Presidentes.
“Los tres son grandes exponentes de lo que es el sacrificio y el trabajo duro. Me siento muy honrada de la decisión que se tomó. Felicitamos a Franklin y la federación de lucha, igual a Beverly y la federación de atletismo y María y la Federación de Judo. Todos hicieron sus respectivos trabajos. Felicitamos a todos los nominados”, indicó la líder del Movimiento Olímpico de Puerto Rico.
Por su parte, el delegado de lucha, Obed Santana, expresó que “es una emoción muy grande. Franklin ha sido como un hijo para nosotros. Nosotros lo vimos desarrollarse en Puerto Rico y luego partir a Estados Unidos a estudiar. Siempre ha representado a Puerto Rico con orgullo. Así lo que ha demostrado en todos los eventos que ha participado, siempre poniendo a Puerto Rico bien en alto y siempre estando en los primeros tres lugares del podio. Es un excelente ser humano, cristiano y disciplinado y siempre le gusta ayudar al prójimo”.
El proceso de elección se dio con la presencia de 26 de 43 delegados de las federaciones adscritas al COPUR en el Salón de los Presidentes de la Casa Olímpica en el Viejo San Juan. La presidenta del organismo olímpico dirigió los procesos eleccionarios designando el comité de escrutinio integrado por el jefe de misión y delegado de canotaje, Víctor G. Ruiz, el delegado de Surfing, José Olmo, y el delegado de vela, Ramón González. Se explicó la boleta de votación donde los tres finalistas aparecieron por orden alfabético de su deporte: Beverly Ramos de atletismo, María Pérez de judo y Franklin Gómez de lucha. Cada presidente con representación en la contienda expuso los motivos del por qué su atleta debía ser el abandero de los Juegos Panamericanos.
La ruta de selección de abanderado inició el lunes, 3 de junio y finalizo el lunes, 17 de junio con el periodo de nominación de deportistas por federación. Solo tres solicitudes fueron válidas, siendo los tres finalistas Ramos, Pérez y Gómez.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, June 26, 2019.- 27 days away from the beginning of the Pan American Games in Lima, the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico (COPUR) has elected by voting, the wrestler Franklin Gómez as standard bearer, during the Ordinary Assembly. The election process was carried out with the presence of 26 out of the 43 delegates from the federations attached to the COPUR in the Hall of the Presidents of the Olympic House in the el Viejo San Juan. The president of the Olympic body led the election processes by designating the scrutiny committee with the Head of Mission, the Canoe Delegate Víctor G. Ruiz, the Surfing Delegate José Olmo, and the Sailing Delegate Ramón González as its members.

The process was explained and then the three finalists appeared in alphabetical order by their sport: Beverly Ramos (Athletics), María Pérez (Judo) and Franklin Gómez (Wrestling). Each president with representation in the contest explained the reasons why the athlete should be the flag bearer champion for the Pan American Games.

The contest started on Monday, June 3rd and ended on Monday, June 17th with the nomination of the athletes by federation. Only three applications were valid, with the three finalists Ramos, Pérez and Gómez.
