PORTO, Portugal, 30 de mayo de 2021.- El primer gol de Kai Havertz en la Liga de Campeones dio la segunda corona al Chelsea con un tanto en la primera parte para derrotar a un decepcionante Manchester City por 1-0, este sábado en Oporto.
LA ESPERA SIGUE. Para el City la espera continúa al menos una temporada más. Pueden ganar todo lo demás, pero no el único premio que sus propietarios de Abu Dhabi desean por encima de todo. La magia que le funcionó dos veces al entrenador Pep Guardiola con el Barcelona hace una década siguió fallándole como en tres años europeos en blanco con el Bayern de Múnich y ahora cinco con el City.

Oporto, sede sustituta de Estambul a última hora, fue testigo de una tercera final íntegramente inglesa tras la derrota del Chelsea en 2008 ante el Manchester United y la victoria del Liverpool en 2019 ante el Tottenham. Thomas Tuchel es el tercer entrenador alemán consecutivo que gana la final tras Jürgen Klopp con el Liverpool en 2019 y Hansi Flick -a costa de Tuchel- con el Bayern de Múnich hace un año.

ÚLTIMA RISA. Tuchel rió el último con el París Saint-Germain, que le despidió a mitad de temporada y le dejó disponible para sustituir a Frank Lampard en el Chelsea. Tras perder la final europea con el PSG hace un año, se mostró encantado de salir vencedor en la segunda ocasión. Dijo: «No sé qué sentir. Estaba muy agradecido por llegar por segunda vez a la final. Los jugadores estaban decididos a ganarla. Animamos a todo el mundo a dar un paso adelante, a ser más valientes y a crear contraataques peligrosos».
¿PENSANDO DEMASIADO EN PEP? El Chelsea mereció un éxito que suscitará el debate sobre si Guardiola volvió a ser culpable de pensar demasiado su estrategia europea. Sacudió a sus ganadores de la Premier League recuperando a Raheem Sterling en el ataque y jugando sin un ancla en el centro del campo. Eso frenó a Ilkay Gundogan, que había sido una fuerza ofensiva tan poderosa en la Premier League.
Sterling estuvo a punto de colarse por detrás de la defensa del Chelsea en los primeros compases, pero el Chelsea fue más peligroso. Timo Werner desperdició dos medias oportunidades y, cuando el City volvió a amenazar, un cruce muy oportuno de Antonio Rüdiger frustró el intento de gol de Phil Foden.
HAVERTZ MARCA. El Chelsea se encontró con un contratiempo en el minuto 38 al perder a Thiago Silva, lesionado, pero se sobrepuso con estilo para adelantarse por medio de Havertz, que retribuyó así el pago récord del club de 70 millones de libras al Bayer Leverkusen el año pasado.
El equipo azul nunca pareció estar en peligro de perder la ventaja, aunque en la segunda parte tuvo mucho menos el balón.
URGENCIA AUMENTADA. El City se lanzó al ataque con mayor urgencia, sobre todo después de la lesión de Kevin de Bruyne. Esto les hizo vulnerables a los contraataques del Chelsea. El suplente Christian Pulisic pudo haber marcado con un gol un trozo de historia, como primer estadounidense en jugar una final de la Liga de Campeones, pero su disparo cruzado se fue desviado.
El afán de Gabriel Jesús aportó brevemente una nueva chispa al ataque de Guardiola, pero ni siquiera el recién llegado Sergio Agüero pudo hacer su vieja magia en el área de gol en sus últimos minutos como jugador del City.
SIN LAMENTOS. Guardiola no se arrepintió de su elección de equipo. Dijo: «Hice lo que pensé que era la mejor decisión. Tuvimos oportunidades. Estuvimos brillantes en la segunda parte, fuimos valientes y no pudimos convertir las ocasiones [porque] eran muy fuertes. Los jugadores estuvieron excepcionales. Era la primera vez que estábamos en esta fase. Ojalá volvamos a estar aquí en el futuro».

Record signing Havertz repays Chelsea with Champions League winner

PORTO, May 30, 2021.- Kai Havertz’s first-ever Champions League goal delivered Chelsea’s second such crown with a first-half strike which defeated a disappointing Manchester City 1-0 in Porto.

WAIT GOES ON. For City the wait goes on for at least another season. They can win everything else but not the one prize their Abu Dhabi owners want above all else.

The magic which worked twice for manager Pep Guardiola with Barcelona a decade ago continued to fail him as it did in three blank European years with Bayern Munich and now five with City.

Porto, late substitute venue for Istanbul, saw a third all-English final after Chelsea’s 2008 shootout defeat by Manchester United and Liverpool’s 2019 win over Tottenham. Thomas Tuchel is the third successive German coach to win the final after Jurgen Klopp with Liverpool in 2019 and Hansi Flick – at Tuchel’s expense – with Bayern Munich a year ago.

LAST LAUGH. Tuchel had the last laugh on Paris Saint-Germain who sacked him in mid-season and left him available to replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea. Having lost the European final with PSG a year ago he was thrilled to emerge as a winner second time around.

He said: “I don’t know what to feel. I was so grateful to arrive a second time in the final. The players were determined to win this. We encouraged everybody to step up and step out, to be more brave and create dangerous counter-attacks”.

OVER-THINKING PEP? Chelsea deserved a success which will prompt debate over whether Guardiola was again guilty of over-thinking his European strategy. He shook up his Premier League winners by recalling Raheem Sterling in attack and playing without a midfield anchor. That restrained Ilkay Gundogan who had been such a powerful attacking force in the Premier League.

Sterling almost sneaked in behind the Chelsea defence in the opening exchanges but Chelsea were more dangerous. Timo Werner squandered two half-chances and when City did threaten again a superbly-timed tackle from Antonio Rudiger foiled goal-bound Phil Foden.

HAVERTZ SCORES. Chelsea met a setback in the 38th minute in losing injured Thiago Silva but they overcame it in style to take the lead through Havertz who duly repaid the club record £70m fee paid to Bayer Leverkusen last year.

This was a lead they never looked in danger of relinquishing even though, in the second half, they saw much less of the ball.

INCREASED URGENCY. City scrambled forward with increased urgency, particularly once injury had removed Kevin de Bruyne. This rendered them vulnerable to Chelsea counter-attacks. Substitute Christian Pulisic might have marked with a goal a slice of history, as the first American to play in a Champions League Final, but his shot on the break drifted wide.

Briefly the eagerness of Gabriel Jesus brought new spark into Guardiola’s attack but even late-arriving Sergio Aguero could not work his old brand of goal-area magic in his last minutes as a City player.

NO REGRETS. Guardiola had no regrets about his team selection. He said: “I did what I thought was the best decision. We had chances. We were brilliant in the second half, we were brave and we could not convert the chances [because] they were so strong. The players were exceptional. It was the first time we were at this stage. Hopefully we will be here again in the future”.–
