IBAGUÉ, Colombia 14 de febrero de 2020.– Estar en los eventos deportivos en medio del Coronavirus, me deja sensaciones encontradas, por un lado, la alegría de tener actividad deportiva, de ver como los ojos expresan las sonrisas de los atletas, de orgullo al ver que se pueden organizar eventos contra todo pronóstico, pero al mismo tiempo de tristeza al ver las graderías desocupadas, de no escuchar como los asistentes alientan a los atletas a todo pulmón, de tener que hacer entrevistas con unos cuantos metros de distancia o de saludar de lejos a los atletas.

Y sí, en medio de la pandemia del Covid-19, el patinaje se convirtió en el primer deporte en regresar a la actividad competitiva en el 2021 en Colombia, y lo hizo de manera internacional, gracias a la gestión de la World Skate América (WSA) y de la Federación Colombiana de Patinaje, que le dieron la oportunidad a más de 1000 patinadores del continente americano (Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Canadá, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estados Unidos, Guatemala, México, Paraguay, Perú, República Dominicana y Venezuela), de competir en un ambiente seguro y bajo los más estrictos protocolos de bioseguridad, «En medio de las dificultades que atraviesa el mundo, por supuesto también nuestro país, tener en suelo tolimense un poco más de 1300 deportistas en todas las categorías, es el primer triunfo, la primera medalla de oro de este certamen, confirmando a Colombia como un país que brinda garantías para hacer eventos de calidad y, en estas circunstancias, seguros para todos los involucrados», dijo Jorge Roldán, Secretario de WSA y Director general de los torneos. 

Organizar un evento de esta categoría no es sencillo y más cuando se hace en medio de una pandemia; las reglas y requerimientos son muchos, y para cumplir con uno de ellos, la organización decidió establecer un orden estricto de competencias para no sobrepasar el aforo permitido por las autoridades, por primera vez cada categoría tuvo un horario señalado para entrar al escenario y a la pista y al finalizar cada competencia los patinadores debían abandonar el escenario lo más pronto posible. Además, el ingreso solo incluyó a los patinadores, entrenadores, fisioterapeutas, jueces, personal de la transmisión oficial de televisión y periodistas; en esta oportunidad, los familiares y acompañantes tuvieron que ver las competencias por televisión, en un lugar acondicionado especialmente para ellos. 

Los más pequeños

Las promesas del patinaje tuvieron la oportunidad de participar, por primera vez en un torneo internacional, pues estos eventos tuvieron en competencia a patinadores de 8, 9 y 10 años de edad, en la primera fase y de deportistas de 11, 12 y 13 años en la segunda, quienes fueron grandes teloneros de las competencias de junior y mayores, «Cada momento vivido por los pequeños, por el semillero del patinaje americano, ha permitido observar el avance que se tiene en la formación de estos niños, quienes, a pesar de su corta edad, nos dan un ejemplo de entrega y trabajo en equipo. Creo que las mejores postales del panamericano las brindaron estos deportistas que son el futuro no solo en la pista, son el futuro de nuestras vidas», afirmó Alberto Herrera Ayala, presidente de la World Skate América.

Protocolo de Bioseguridad

Con el primer evento deportivo de 2021 en Colombia, llegó también mi primera prueba Covid y tengo que admitir que no fue nada fácil, pues, aunque me he cuidado al 100 x 100, mi cabeza empezó a crear historias sin fundamento, y la idea de tener un resultado positivo era casi como una pesadilla, era la segunda vez que la palabra ‘positivo’ me generaba tanto miedo, y no se imaginan la felicidad que sentí al ver la palabra ‘negativo’ en ese papel, ¡Gracias a Dios!, ya que sin ese resultado, el ingreso al patinódromo sería negado, ni siquiera tendría la oportunidad de reclamar la acreditación y todo el plan que incluso incluía viajar a otra ciudad, hubiera sido un fracaso. El negativo en la prueba Covid se convirtió en el primer requisito para todos los que queríamos entrar al escenario, el uso del tapaboca, el distanciamiento social, el lavado de manos y la desinfección, fueron también exigencias para todos. 

«Para los deportistas volver a tener competencia después de un año donde estuvimos muy quietos y que sean competencias internacionales, es bien importante, es muy motivante, nosotros entrenamos para correr y cuando hay que entrenar solamente por mantenerse, es muy complicado y la motivación es poca, entonces esto es realmente es muy importante. El tapabocas, es supremamente incómodo pero con el resto de medidas uno se va acostumbrado», expresó el colombiano Daniel Zapata, campeón mundial, y añadió, «Desde el día que llegamos a Ibagué, solo hemos salido a la pista y de regreso al hotel. En la mañana bajamos a desayunar temprano, estamos todo el tiempo con el tapabocas, en el hotel no nos dejan estar sin el, prácticamente solo nos lo quitamos para ir a dormir, son supremamente estrictos con los protocolos de bioseguridad».

La Prensa

El proceso de acreditación fue igual que siempre, todas las solicitudes fueron recibidas y a cada periodista se le informó sobre las reglas que debían cumplir, especialmente la presentación del resultado negativo del Covid, prueba que debía ser pagada por cada periodista o su medio de comunicación, razón por la que creo, muchos decidieron no asistir, la situación laboral especialmente para los independientes sigue siendo muy díficil y pagar una prueba no es barato. Ya en la tribuna de prensa, se destinó un espacio de aproximadamente 100 personas, pero su aforo se redujo a solo 30, para así evitar el acercamiento. Aun así, la mayoría de los colegas locales decidieron seguir las competencias por televisión, pues la Federación Colombiana de Patinaje cuenta con servicio de transmisión sin interrupción vía streaming, (con un excelente equipo de trabajo, narradores, comentaristas, estadistas y reporteros) sin restricciones de uso, algo poco común no solo en Colombia, sino en la mayoría de los países del continente, ya que las Federaciones Deportivas prefieren venderle los derechos de transmisión a los canales de televisión, quienes solo transmiten las pruebas y o partidos de más interés y de acuerdo a su beneficio de rating y a la disponibilidad que el fútbol deja en su programación.

Este evento es de gran importancia en el continente ya que es clasificatorio para los I Juegos Panamericanos Junior que se tienen programados para este 2021en Cali, Colombia además porque cada campeón de esos juegos tendrán cupo asegurado para los Juegos Panamericanos que se realizarán en Chile.

De esto viven los deportistas, de esto vivimos muchos periodistas, así que mientras los eventos deportivos se hagan con todos los protocolos de bioseguridad y se cuide a cada una de las personas, bienvenido sea el deporte a nuestra nueva normalidad.

Colombia hosts a continental roller skating event

IBAGUÉ, Colombia February 14, 2020.– Being at sporting events in the midst of the Coronavirus, leaves me with mixed feelings, in one hand, the joy of having sports activity, of seeing how the eyes express the smiles of the athletes, of pride seeing that events can be organized against all odds, but at the same time, sadness when seeing the unoccupied stands, not hearing how the fans cheer the athletes from the bottom of their lungs, having to do interviews with a few meters away or greet athletes from far.

And yes, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, roller skating became the first sport to return to competitive activity in 2021 in Colombia, and with an internationally event, thanks to the work of World Skate America (WSA) and the Colombian Skating Federation, which gave the opportunity to more than 1000 roller skaters from the American continent (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela), of competing in a safe environment and under the strictest biosafety protocols, «In the midst of the difficulties that the world is going through, of course also our country, have on Tolima’s soil a little more than 1,300 athletes in all categories, is the first triumph, the first gold medal of this contest, confirming Colombia as a country that provides guarantees to do quality events and, in these circumstances, safe for everyone», said Jorge Roldán, WSA Secretary and General Director of both tournaments.

Organizing an event of this category is not easy, especially when it is done in the middle of a pandemic; the rules and requirements are many, and to comply with one of them, the organization decided to establish a strict order in the competitions program, to avoid to exceed the capacity allowed in the venue by the authorities, for the first time each category had a designated time to enter the venue and the track and at the end of each competition the skaters had to leave as soon as possible. In addition, the entry only included skaters, coaches, physiotherapists, judges, staff from the official television broadcast and journalists; in this occasion, the relatives and companions had to watch the competitions on tv, in a place specially designed for them.

The little skaters

The future champions of roller skating had the opportunity to participate, for the first time in an international tournament, since these events had in track roller skaters of 8, 9 and 10 years of age, who participated in the first stage, and athletes of 11, 12 and 13 years who took part in the second phase, who were great opening actors for the junior and senior competitions, «Every moment lived by the little ones, by the seedbed of American skating, has allowed us to observe the progress that is made in the formation of these children, who, despite of their young age, give us an example of dedication and teamwork. I believe that the best postcards of this Pan American were given by these athletes who are the future not only on the track, they are the future of our lives», said Alberto Herrera Ayala, president of World Skate America.

Biosafety Protocol

With the first sports event of 2021 in Colombia, my first Covid test also arrived and I have to admit that it was not easy at all, because, although I have taken care of myself 100 x 100, my head began to create stories without foundation, and the idea of having a positive result was almost like a nightmare, it was the second time that the word ‘positive’ generated so much fear in me, and you cannot imagine the happiness I felt when I saw the word ‘negative’ on that paper, Thank God! Because, without that result, entry to the skating event would be denied, we would not even have the opportunity to claim accreditation and the entire plan that even included traveling to another city would have been a failure. The negative in the Covid test became the first requirement for all of us who wanted to enter the venue, the use of a mask, social distancing, hand washing and sanitising, were also compulsory for everyone.

«For athletes to have competition again after a year where we were very calm and especially international competitions it is very important, it is very motivating, we train to skate and when you have to train just to keep fit, it is very complicated and the motivation is little, so this is really very important. The mask is extremely uncomfortable but with the rest of the measures you get used to it», said Colombian World Champion Daniel Zapata, and he added, «From the day we arrived in Ibagué, we have just gone out to the track and back to the hotel. In the morning when we go down for breakfast, we have to use the mask all the time, in the hotel they do not let you be without it, we practically only take it off to go to sleep, they are extremely strict with biosafety protocols».

The Press

The accreditation process was the same as always, all the requests were received and each journalist was informed about the rules that they had to comply with, especially the presentation of the negative result of the Covid, proof that had to be paid by each journalist or their media company, reason why I think, many decided not to attend, the employment situation especially for the freelancers is still very difficult and paying for a test is not cheap. In the press area, a space of approximately 100 seats was allocated, but its capacity was reduced to only 30 available, in order to keep social distancing. Even so, most of the local colleagues decided to follow the competitions on television, since the Colombian Skating Federation has a broadcast service without interruption via streaming, (with an excellent work team, narrators, commentators, statesmen and reporters) without restrictions of use, something unusual not only in Colombia, but in most of the countries of the continent, as the Sports Federations prefer to sell the broadcast rights to big television channels companies, who only broadcast events and / or matches of more interest according to its rating benefit and the availability that football leaves in its programming.

This event is of great importance in the continent since it is a qualifier for the I Junior Pan American Games that are scheduled for this 2021 in Cali, Colombia, and also because who ever wins a gold medal in the Juniors Pan-American Games will automatically get a place in the Pan-American Games which will be held in Chile. 

This is what athletes live on, this is what many journalists live on, so as long as the events are carried out with all the biosafety protocols and the care of each person is done, sporting events are welcome to our new normal.
