SANTIAGO, Chile, 17 de abril de 2020.- Todos hablamos de la pandemia, y era que no, ha afectado la vida diaria de todos, y a todas las industrias económicas, y el deporte no escapa a esto.  El tema que nadie conocía el Coronavirus, y menos las consecuencias en los torneos, éstas eran impensadas unos meses atrás.  Nadie lo previó, nadie lo imagino, el único torneo cancelado que ha pagado seguro por causas así es el majestuoso Wimbledon, pero aun así no lo compartió con los otros actores en el mundo de tenis.

Los que tienen que tomar decisiones en relación al Plan de Continuidad en el deporte deberían realizar las evaluaciones de Riesgos del Negocio, pero no lo han hecho. Circunscribo mi comentario a aquellos quienes, en teoría, deben solucionar esta situación por el solo hecho de tener un cargo técnico, para resolver los temas de los torneos, su continuidad, fechas, plazas, traslados, etc.

Sin embargo, el mundo del fútbol está enfermo, y con miedo, con una fiebre espantosa que no puede bajar, ha quedado inmovilizado a la espera que se desarrolle la vacuna mágica en Europa (ahora hablo de la UEFA). Esta enfermedad viene de antes de la actual pandemia, la de copiar todo, formatos de competencias, formatos de acuerdos comerciales, poner las fechas a la par que Europa, sin analizar que acá estamos entre dos hemisferios, en distancias muy largas, traslados difíciles aún antes de la pandemia (que ahora se dificultarían muchísimo más por varios años).  Sí, Sudamérica en cuanto al fútbol está enferma, para volver a copiar los formatos europeos, sin consideraciones locales, como se ha hecho siempre, sin medir las consecuencias que esto podría traer ante una situación como esta.

Mi vida profesional me hizo pasar cerca de 20 años en laboratorios farmacéuticos transnacionales en 4 continentes. Recuerdo que cuando una feroz influenza dejó sin vacunas al mercado chileno, había que traer vacunas a Chile, fuere como fuere, la situación sanitaria lo demandaba, y el gerente general tomó el teléfono, rápidamente hizo un par de llamados a contactos en su ciudad natal de San Juan de Puerto Rico y consiguió y arregló un embarque de una gran cantidad de vacunas. La compra sería embarcada rápidamente, y el gerente llamó a una reunión para festejar que venían rumbo a Chile las dosis que se necesitaban.  La fiesta se acabó de inmediato, cuando uno de los profesionales le comentó que las cepas de vacunas del hemisferio norte eran distintas a las cepas que se utilizaban para la población del sur, que además estás no serían aprobadas por los expertos sanitarios del país. Todo salió mal.  El tomar decisiones, sin consultar a los expertos no sirve, no importa que seas el jefe, el que está a cargo, el gerente de lo que sea, si no te haces apoyar por quienes realmente sabe del tema, podrás hacer muchas gestiones, y tratar de importar lo que funciona perfectamente en otros lugares, pero no será la medicina que se requiere.

El fútbol sudamericano sufre de síntomas similares a Europa actualmente, el deber suspender todas sus competencias: Las incipientes Clasificatorias al Mundial de Qatar 2022; La Copa América que se hacía este año para ajustarse al calendario de UEFA; Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Ligas locales y torneos tipo Copa de cada país. 

Al igual que en Europa, también acá los grandes organizadores están sesgados por la cantidad de partidos que han entregado en contrato a los sponsors y las televisoras, que hoy rigen sobre un mercado que pareciera más un caldo de cultivo que una real competencia.  Hoy en las ligas, más del 70% de los partidos no tiene incidencia en los que llegan a torneos internacionales o descienden a otras divisiones, y todo esto por los formatos.  Los formatos definen todo, presupuestos, viajes, sedes, cantidad de participantes, cantidad de jugadores a mover, rondas, calendarios, fechas, logística, todo.  En países como el ya nombrado Chile, acaban de decidir que esperarán hasta poder arrancar de nuevo y no hacer ningún cambio al formato pase lo que pase. Esto significa jugar las 34 fechas en tiempo corto, probablemente a estadios vacíos, sin tomar en cuenta que habrá una cantidad escandalosa de partidos intrascendentes donde no se juega ni el campeonato ni el descenso ni llegar a copas internacionales. ¿Señores, la TV y los sponsors pagan por esto? ¿Les vale la inversión para tener partidos que nadie ve y que son muy pero muy vulnerables a amaño de partidos (“match-fixing”)? El formato debe cambiar, y para esto se debería haber una mesa redonda con la federación, la televisión, las autoridades, los sponsors, los jugadores y los expertos en materia de formato de torneos que entregarían las soluciones adecuadas a cada mercado especifico.

Pero lamentablemente están esperando a la respuesta mágica de Europa para traer la medicina equivocada a Sudamérica. Es momento que en Asunción se tomen las medidas que realmente se requieren, para un punto geográfico tan distante al del viejo continente, tan distante en ideas, con intereses propios, en la forma de ver el mundo del fútbol como un todo nuestro, como un todo propio. Aprovechemos la oportunidad y los meses sin fútbol que lamentablemente aún nos quedan, no solo para encontrar soluciones innovadoras a la temporada en curso, sino para mejorar las siguientes temporadas. Por ejemplo, en Copa Libertadores, cambiar el número de fechas en la fase actual de grupos a solo 4 (cuatro), eliminado los grupos, bajo el Formato de Zonas ©⁽¹⁾. Así eliminamos dos fechas, y podemos acortar más fechas de la siguiente fase de la Copa Libertadores 2020, pero además sería como una prueba para adaptar un formato sin grupos (ni eliminación directa en la primera fase) para las siguientes Copas, competiendo todos contra todos en un torneo muy emocionante, con todos los hinchas siguiendo los resultados de todos los partidos y bajando el número de partidos insignificantes. También se debería analizar cambiar el número de participantes en vez que copiar los 32 de la Champions League. ¿Quizás acá es mejor tener 18, 20, 36 o quizás 40? Aprovechemos esta oportunidad para desarrollar soluciones especificas a Sudamérica para regresar el fútbol sudamericano al lugar que se merece. ¿Acaso no haremos uso de la cuarentena para arreglar los problemas?

The Football World is Sick: The prescription to complete tournaments in short time

SANTIAGO, Chile, April 17, 2020.- We all talk about the pandemic, and rightly so – it has affected the daily life of everyone and any industry, including sport, cannot not escape this. The thing is that nobody knew about the corona virus, and even less about its consequences on sport events and leagues. This was unthinkable a few months ago. Nobody foresaw it, nobody imagined it, the only canceled tournament that has paid insurance for causes like this is the majestic Wimbledon, but even so it did not share it with the other actors in the world of tennis.

Those who make decisions regarding the Continuity Plan in sport should have carried out Business Risk evaluations, but they have not done so. This comment goes to those who, in theory, should solve this situation for the sole fact of having a technical position, to resolve the issues of the tournaments, their continuity, dates, places, transfers, etc.

However, the world of football is sick, and in fear, with a dreadful fever that does not go away. It has been immobilized while waiting for the magic vaccine to be developed in Europe (I am now talking about UEFA). This disease comes from before the current pandemic, the one of copying everything, competition formats, commercial rights distribution models, schedule, without analyzing that these are two different hemispheres, and in South America we have very long distances, with difficult travels even before the pandemic (which would now be much worse for several years). Yes, South America in terms of football is sick, and looks to once again copy the European formats, without local considerations, without measuring the consequences that this could bring in a situation like this.

My professional life made me spend nearly 20 years in transnational pharmaceutical laboratories across 4 continents. I remember that when a fierce influenza left the Chilean market without vaccines, vaccines had to be brought to Chile, be that as it may. The health situation demanded it, and the general manager picked up the phone, quickly made a couple of calls to contacts in his hometown from San Juan de Puerto Rico and arranged a shipment of a large quantity of vaccines. The purchase would be shipped quickly, and the manager called a meeting to celebrate that the doses needed were coming to Chile. The party ended immediately, after one of the professionals told him that the strains of vaccines in the northern hemisphere were different from the strains that were used for the southern population, and additionally they would not be approved by the country’s health experts. Everything went wrong. Making decisions without consulting the experts is useless, no matter if you are the boss, the one in charge, the manager of whatever, if you do not make yourself supported by those who really know the matter, you will be able to do many things, and might try to import what works perfectly elsewhere, but it won’t be the medicine that is required.

South American football suffers from symptoms as its par in Europe at present, the fact that it had to suspend all competitions: The Qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup; The Copa América that was supposed to be held this year to adjust to the UEFA calendar; Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, national leagues and cups.

As in Europe, here too the big organizers are blinded by the number of matches that were contracted by sponsors and television, which today rule over a market that seems more like a breeding ground than real competition. Today in the leagues, more than 70% of the matches have no impact on those who qualify to international tournaments or descend to lower divisions, and all this due to formats. The formats define everything, budgets, travels, venues, number of participants, number of teams, rounds, calendar, logistics, everything.
Chilean football federation just decided to wait until they can start again and not make any change to the format no matter what happens. This means playing what’s left of the 34 match-days in a short time, probably to empty stadiums, without taking into account that there will be a scandalous number of dead-rubbers between teams that can’t be relegated, win the championship or qualify to international competitions. Gentlemen, the TV and the sponsors pay for this? Is it worth the investment to have matches that nobody sees and that are very, very vulnerable to match-fixing? The format must change, and for this there should be a round table with the federation, the television, the authorities, the sponsors, the players and the experts in the matter of tournament format that would deliver the appropriate solutions to each specific market.

But sadly, they are waiting for the magical response from Europe to bring the wrong medicine to South America. It is time for Asuncion to take the measures that are really required, for a geographical point so distant from the old continent, so distant in ideas, with its own interests, in its way of seeing the world of football. Let’s take advantage of the opportunity given and the months without football that unfortunately we still have left, not only to find innovative solutions to the current season, but to improve the following seasons. For example, in Copa Libertadores, changing the number of matchdays in the current phase from groups to just 4 (four), eliminating the groups, under the Pots System©⁽¹⁾. Thus, we reduced two matchdays, and we can shorten more of the next phase of the Copa Libertadores 2020 to adjust to the new calendar. We could also use this as a test to adapt a format without groups (nor direct elimination in the first phase) for the following editions, competing all against all in a very exciting tournament, with all the fans following the results of all the matches and reducing the number of insignificant matches. CONMEBOL should also consider changing the number of teams instead of copying the 32 from the Champions League. Maybe here it is better to have 18, 20, 36 or maybe 40? Let’s take this opportunity to develop specific solutions for South America to return South American football to the place it deserves.
