BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 14 de junio de 2021.– Hace dos años, la surfista ecuatoriana Dominic «Mimi» Barona, ganó la medalla de plata en los Juegos Panamericanos Lima 2019 y hoy, se ratifica como la representante de Ecuador en las competencias de Surf en Tokio 2020, deporte que debutará en los Juegos Olímpicos.

Nació en Montañita, el 10 de febrero de 1991 y a la edad de 13 años entró al mundo del Surfing, deporte que la ha visto consagrarse como campeona sudamericana de la World Surf League (WSL) en 2018 y en el que ha conseguido más de 15 medallas en diferentes eventos.

LA CLASIFICACIÓN

La clasificación de Dominic estuvo en suspenso, pero se confirmó el pasado 5 de junio de 2021, con la publicación de la lista oficial de la Asociación Internacional de Surf, luego de finalizar el Mundial realizado en El Salvador. Dominic logró quedarse con el cupo panamericano, el cual, hasta justo antes de las semifinales le pertenecía a la peruana Daniella Rosas, quien terminó disputando las finales y ubicada en el cuarto lugar, con lo que aseguraba uno de los cupos a las olimpiadas que otorgaba el evento, y así liberaba el correspondiente a la plaza panamericana, que quedó en manos de Dominic Barona, surfista profesional desde el año 2016 y múltiple campeona Sudamericana. De esta manera, la ecuatoriana logró su clasificación como segunda panamericana. Sin lugar a dudas, un premio al trabajo de muchos años, con lo que, además, escribe su nombre en la historia del olimpismo al convertirse en la primera surfista de Ecuador en participar en los Juegos Olímpicos. La ecuatoriana no dudó en manifestar su agradecimiento a Daniella “¡Gracias por alegrar a todo mi país, te amo por siempre! Nos fuimos a Las olimpiadas, Gracias por ayudarme a cumplir uno de mis sueños desde que era una niña”.

SUPERANDO LA PANDEMIA

Marzo de 2020 se convirtió tal vez en el mes para olvido para cientos de atletas en el mundo y muy tal vez para ella también, pues justo en ese mes estaba lista para participar en Puerto Rico, pero el cierre de fronteras y el aislamiento a causa del Covid-19 hicieron que regresara a su país, donde igualmente tenía que estar en cuarentena, las playas estaban totalmente cerradas, haciendo imposible incluso poder entrenar. Han pasado muchos meses y aunque seguimos en pandemia en todo el mundo, en este 2021 Dominic logró su regreso a la competencia, primero en el Campeonato Nacional realizado en Manta y luego en el Mundial de El Salvador.

La vida para Dominic es el Surf, “entreno todos los días junto a mis coaches Mario Gambellini e Israel Barona, combinamos Surf con la parte física, al final del día revisamos las tomas para poder corregir los errores; surfear es mi carrera y mi trabajo entonces estoy a tiempo completo haciéndolo”, su objetivo principal es claro, no puede ser otro “mi objetivo para las olimpiadas es ir a buscar una medalla olímpica”, le dijo la ecuatoriana a AIPS.

UN POCO DE HISTORIA

Montañita es considerada la cuna del Surf en Ecuador, y esta es tal vez la mayor ventaja de Dominic; allí llegan cientos de surfistas de todo el mundo, tanto profesionales como aficionados, en busca de las mejores olas. Los locales, también se han destacado a nivel internacional y han desarrollado gran destreza en este deporte, y para la muestra está Israel Barona, el hermano mayor de Dominic, y quien se podría decir, es el responsable de que ella se haya enamorado de este deporte. Vivir en Montañita le permite entrenar diariamente, algo fundamental para todo atleta profesional, aunque no siempre fue fácil, debido a problemas económicos.

SUS LOGROS

En 2014, fue segunda en el ISA 50TH World Surfing Games realizado en Punta Rocas, Perú, donde logró la puntuación más alta en una ronda en la historia del evento.

En 2016 repitió en el podio en el ISA realizado en Costa Rica.

En 2018 se coronó campeona sudamericana de la World Surf League (WSL) con un puntaje de 4310.

En 2019 se adjudicó el premio Corona Pro Surf Circuit, evento de la Organización Nacional de Surf, que se realizó en la playa de Middles en Puerto Rico.

En 2019 ganó la medalla de plata en los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima.

Además, ha sido siete veces Campeona Nacional, cuatro veces Campeona Latinoamericana, doble Campeona Bolivariana, Panamericana y Sudamericana de la WSL.

Finalmente, como preparación para los Juegos Olímpicos, Ecuador será sede de dos eventos de la Liga Mundial de Surf, los cuales se realizarán en las icónicas playas de Montañita y Salinas respectivamente, el primero será el WSL Montañita Corona Open del 16 al 20 de junio en la división olímpica tabla corta, y el segundo será el WSL Salinas Corona Open del 23 al 27 de junio en Playa FAE.___

DOMINIC BARONA WILL CARRY ECUADOR’S FLAG IN THE SURFING EVENTS IN TOKYO 2020

BOGOTÁ, Colombia, June 14, 2021.– Two years ago, the Ecuadorian surfer Dominic «Mimi» Barona, won the silver medal at the Pan American Games Lima 2019 and today, she is ratified as the representative of Ecuador in the competitions of Surfing in Tokyo 2020, a sport that will made its debut at the Olympic Games.

She was born in Montañita, on February 10, 1991 and at the age of 13 she entered the world of surfing, a sport that has seen her establish herself as the South American champion of the World Surf League (WSL) in 2018 and in which she has achieved more than 15 medals in different events.

THE CLASSIFICATION

Dominic’s classification was on hold, but it was confirmed on June 5, 2021, with the publication of the official list of the International Surf Association, after the World Cup in El Salvador ended. Dominic managed to stay with the Pan-American quota, which, until just before the semifinals, belonged to the Peruvian Daniella Rosas, who ended up in the contest of the finals and finished in fourth place, thus securing one of the quotas for the Olympics granted by the event, so the place corresponding to the Pan-American area was released, and it happened to be in the hands of Dominic Barona, professional surfer since 2016 and multiple South American champion. In this way, the Ecuadorian achieved her classification as the second Pan American. Undoubtedly, it is an award for the work of many years, with which she also writes her name in the history of Olympism by becoming the first surfer from Ecuador to participate in the Olympic Games. The Ecuadorian did not hesitate to express her gratitude to Daniella “Thank you for making my whole country happy, I love you forever! We are going to the Olympics, Thank you for helping me fulfill one of my dreams since I was a child”.

OVERCOMING THE PANDEMIC

March 2020, perhaps became the month to be forgotten for hundreds of athletes in the world and maybe for her too, because just in that month she was ready to participate in Puerto Rico, but the closing of borders and lockdown due to the Covid-19 made her return to her country, where she also had to be in quarantine, the beaches were completely closed, making it impossible even to train. Many months have passed and although we are still in a pandemic throughout the world, in this 2021 Dominic managed to return to the competition, first in the National Championship held in Manta and then in the World Cup in El Salvador.

Life for Dominic is Surfing, “I train every day with my coaches Mario Gambellini and Israel Barona, we combine Surfing with the physical part, at the end of the day we review the videos to be able to correct mistakes; surfing is my career and my job so I’m doing it full time”; her aim is clear, it cannot be another «my main aim for the Olympics is to go for an Olympic medal», the Ecuadorian told AIPS.

A LITTLE OF HISTORY

Montañita is considered the birthplace of Surfing in Ecuador, and this is perhaps Dominic’s greatest advantage; there come hundreds of surfers from all over the world, both professionals and amateurs in search of the best waves. The locals have also stood out internationally and have developed great skill in this sport, an example of this is Israel Barona, Dominic’s older brother, and who we could said is the responsible for her, falling in love with this sport. Living in Montañita allows her to train daily, something essential for every professional athlete, although it was not always easy, due to financial problems.

HER ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2014, she was second at the ISA 50TH World Surfing Games held in Punta Rocas, Peru, where she achieved the highest score in a round in the event’s history.

In 2016 she repeated on the podium at the ISA held in Costa Rica.

In 2018 she was crowned South American champion of the World Surf League (WSL) with a score of 4,310.

In 2019, she got the Corona Pro Surf Circuit trophy, an event of the National Surf Organization, which was held on Middles Beach in Puerto Rico.

In 2019 she won the silver medal at the Pan American Games in Lima.

She has also been seven times National Champion, four times Latin American Champion, double Bolivarian, Pan American and South American Champion of the WSL.

Finally, as a preparation for the Olympic Games, Ecuador will host two events of the World Surf League, which will take place on the iconic beaches of Montañita and Salinas respectively, the first will be the WSL Montañita Corona Open from June 16 to 20 in the shortboard Olympic division, and the second will be the WSL Salinas Corona Open from June 23 to 27 at FAE Beach.
