MEDELLÍN, Colombia, 30 de octubre de 2017.- Poco a poco llegaron a Colombia y especialmente a Medellín las glorias del boxeo mundial. El lobby del Hotel Dan Carlton fue todo un escenario de abrazos, fotos, recuerdos, anécdotas, risas y mucha alegría. Quien más estuvo compartiendo no solo con sus colegas y periodistas sino con aficionados que llegaron con la ilusión de una foto o un autógrafo, fue el panameño Roberto ‘Manos de Piedra’ Durán; para ellos no fue difícil acercase, pues el ex boxeador campeón mundial del Peso Ligero no tuvo reparos en atender a todos y cada uno.
Otro campeón presente en este primer día fue el colombiano Miguel ‘Happy’ Lora, ex campeón mundial del Peso Gallo a mediados de los años 80. Logró la corona del Consejo Mundial en 1985 y la retuvo 7 veces durante 3 años. Al final de su carrera deportiva sumó 40 peleas de las cuales ganó 37, 17 por Knock Out y perdió 3, una de ellas también por KO.
El encuentro entre estos dos ex boxeadores fue muy emotivo, demostrando que a pesar de los años lo que prevalece es una buena amistad.
En cuanto a la parte administrativa de la Convención, se llevó a cabo la Asamblea del Directorio General donde los máximos dirigentes en cabeza del Presidente Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, tuvieron la oportunidad de debatir sobre aspectos importantes para el futuro de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB). Uno de los puntos importantes fue el programa “Fair Boxing” y que terminó con la aprobación de que se haga de manera obligatoria para combates Mundiales y Regionales, lo que hará de la actividad en el organismo, algo más seguro y justo.

“Fair Boxing” propuesta del propio Presidente Mendoza, busca hacer del Boxeo un deporte más limpio, por lo que para las peleas de los títulos mencionados anteriormente, el boxeador deberá estar inscrito en el Programa de la Agencia Voluntaria Antidoping (WADA por sus siglas en inglés), de esta manera los controles dopaje se realizarán aleatoriamente como en otros deportes. Adicional a estas pruebas, Mendoza informó que los promotores pueden solicitarlas antes de las peleas, haciéndose cargo de los gastos. Ahora solo queda crear el comité que se encargue de este programa.
También se habló de la importancia del acuerdo con la Universidad de Antioquia, con el que se busca tener deportistas integrales.
El Presidente Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, resaltó que este es el momento para cambiar la mentalidad y que en lugar de pedirle al boxeo, sean los dirigentes y la organización quienes le den a este deporte.
En el segundo día de la 96° Convención se sesionará la Reunión de las Regionales, la Reunión de Promotores, el Comité de Clasificaciones y el Comité de Campeonatos.

«FAIR BOXING» APPROVED AT THE AMB CONGRESS IN MEDELLÍN

MEDELLÍN, Colombia, October 30, 2017.- The Box Legends had arrived in Colombia, especially in Medellin for the 96° WBA Convention organized in this city after it has been moved from Venezuela. The Dan Carlton’s lobby served as space for hugs, photos, memories, laughter and much joy. Many journalists from all around the world and boxing fans came to this hotel with the illusion of a photo or an autograph from any of the greatest leyends boxer such as Oscar de La Hoya, Evander Holyfield or Roberto Duran, among others; actually Duran ‘Stone Hands’ was the one who shared a lot of time not only with colleagues and journalists but with fans, for them, it was not difficult to approach because the former Lightweight World Champion had no problem attending each and every one, always with an smile.
Another champion at the lobby on this first day was the Colombian Miguel ‘Happy’ Lora, former World Champion of Bantamweight in the mid-80s. He won the World Council Crown in 1985 and held it for 7 times during 3 years. At the end of his sports career he had 40 fights, won 37, 17 for Knock Out and lost 3, one of them for K.O.
The meeting between these two former boxers Lora and Duran, was very emotional, showing that despite the years the most important is a good friendship.
Regarding the administrative topics of the Convention, the Assembly of the General Directorate was held and there, the top leaders of each continent headed by President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, had the opportunity to discuss important aspects for the future of the World Boxing Association (WBA). One of the topics was the support given to the «Fair Boxing» program which ended with the approval as mandatory for World and Regional fights, with a though of making the boxing activity safer and fairer. «Fair Boxing» proposed by President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza himself, seeks to make Box a cleaner sport, so, for the combats of the titles mentioned above, the fighter must be enrolled in the Volunteer Anti-Doping Agency Program (VADA), in this way the doping controls will be carried out randomly as in other sports. In addition to these, Mendoza informed that the promoters can request to take the samples before the fights, by paying for it. Now the only thing left is to create a committee to oversee this program.
Besides this the WBA President Mr. Mendoza talked about the importance of the agreement signed with the University of Antioquia, which seeks for better boxers as humans.
President Mendoza, highlighted that this is the time to change the mentality, instead of asking to boxing, are the leaders and the organization who should give to this sport.
On the second day of the 96th Convention, the Meeting of the Regionals, the Meeting of Promoters, the Committee of Classifications and the Committee of Championships will be held.
