Los doblistas número 1 del mundo comenzaron en Cincinnati, María Camila Osorio se alista para el WTA de Praga y María Angélica Bernal debutará en el US Open en Silla de Ruedas.

BOGOTÄ, Colombia, 27 de agosto de 2020.- El Masters 1000 de Cincinnati se convirtió en el torneo que vio el regreso de los tenistas colombianos Juan Sebastián Cabal y Robert Farah a la actividad competitiva, aunque no fue el mejor retorno a las canchas, pues fueron derrotados en la primera ronda por la pareja conformada por los británicos Jamie Murray y Neal Skupski, sin embargo y sin tratar de sacar excusas, hay que tener en cuenta que el regreso a la práctica y / o entrenamientos en Colombia se demoraron mucho más que en Europa. Aun así fue un partido bastante reñido y que se tuvo que definir en dos tie-break, el juego terminó 7-6(5) y 7-6(3).

Ahora la atención de los colombianos se centra en lo que será el primer Grand Slam del 2020 después de la pandemia, y también el primero de este 2020 juntos, pues recordemos que en enero se disputó el Australian Open, torneo en el que Robert Farah no pudo participar (por encontrarse en el proceso de aclaración de un caso de dopaje, el cual luego fue aclarado y el tenista terminó libre de culpa) y en el que Juan Sebastián hizo dupla con el español Jaume Munar.

Jugar sin público será extraño

Ser la dupla favorita al título y perder en primera ronda de un Masters 1000 no es fácil, pero la confianza va volviendo, y el resultado de Cincinnati lo hace más fácil, pues tampoco fueron superados con una gran diferencia.

Por eso la ilusión de regresar al US Open y retener el título es grande, no sólo para ellos, sino para quienes han seguido sus carreras y son conocedores del tenis. Allí también todos los ojos estarán puestos en ellos, no solo por ser los favoritos al ser la dupla número 1 del mundo, sino porque con el paso de los años se han convertido en una de las parejas más especiales del tour, tal vez la única que ha jugado por tantos años junta, que con su constancia ha logrado escalar hasta llegar a la cima y que no solo se consideran compañeros de juego, sino hermanos.

El año pasado, en el USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center, Robert y Juan Sebastián derrotaron justamente a la pareja británica de Jamie y Neal en semifinales, también con un doble tie-break 7-6(5) y 7-6(8) para enfrentarse en la gran final a la dupla de Horacio Zeballos (ARG) y Marcel Granollers (ESP) ante quienes se impusieron en dos sets 6-4 y 7-5 logrando así su segundo Grand Slam del año como dupla.

¿Pero, y cómo creen que será jugar ahora, que varios eventos serán sin público?, preguntó un periodista durante una rueda de prensa virtual, a lo que Robert Farah respondió «jugar sin público nunca lo he experimentado, igual de vez en cuando jugamos partidos donde no hay mucho público, pero obviamente lo normal en Grand Slam es que las canchas siempre este llenas, entonces no sé, creo que va a ser muy extraño, tendremos que estar muy concentrados dentro del mismo equipo, absorber esa energía entre nosotros ya que no tendremos la que el público puede llegar a brindarle a uno en una situación normal».

Por ahora la lista de aceptación cuenta con duplas como la del brasileño Marcelo Melo y el polaco Lukasz Kubot, la de los mencionados finalistas del año pasado, el argentino Zeballos y el español Granollers, y la de los británicos Murray y Skupski.

Otros tenistas del continente americano en la lista de aceptación del cuadro de dobles son, Rajeev Ram (USA), Bruno Soares (BRA), Jack Sock (USA) haciendo dupla con Jackson Withrow (USA), Austin Krajicek (USA), Denis Shapovalov (CAN), Santiago González (MEX), Marcelo Demoliner (BRA), Marcelo Arévalo (ESA) y Máximo González (ARG)

El circuito WTA tendrá en competencia a María Camila Osorio Serrano, la colombiana campeona del US Open Junior 2019.

El WTA 125k de Praga se convertirá en el torneo para el regreso de María Camila Osorio Serrano a la actividad competitiva, el cual se jugará del 29 de agosto al 6 de septiembre.

La tenista colombiana quien ya había regresado a entrenamientos en Cúcuta, su ciudad natal, viajó a Bogotá para adelantarlos también en la altura y quedar lista para el viaje a República Checa.

Durante su estadía en la capital, María Camila realizó sus entrenamientos en el Club San Jacinto, una de las sedes de la Federación Colombiana de Tenis, desde donde manifestó estar bien con su rendimiento, «tuve la oportunidad de jugar un partido y cuando peloteaba pensé que iba a fallar más. De hecho he jugado muy bien, he metido las bolas y es extraño porque venir del nivel del mar a la altura casi siempre cuesta, pero me sentí bien».

María Camila de 18 años de edad, es la actual campeona del US Open Junior, es la número 1 de Colombia y la 205 del ranking de la WTA. Después de Praga, el calendario de torneos para la colombiana continuaría en Francia con el W60 Saint-Malo del 7 al 13 de septiembre, seguido del W80 Cagnes-Sur-Mer del 14 al 20 de septiembre. Para este entonces espera haber logrado la clasificación al cuadro principal de Roland Garros, de conseguirlo, sería la primera vez que juegue un Grand Slam como profesional en esa fase, pues en enero participó en el Australian Open pero en la qualy, donde llegó hasta segunda ronda.

María Angélica Bernal, será la representante de Colombia en el tenis en Silla de Ruedas del US Open.

Y el sueño se hizo realidad! María Angélica Bernal jugará por primera vez un Grand Slam, logro que consigue por ser la actual número 10 del mundo en el ranking del Tenis Adaptado, listado en el que es además la única tenista del continente americano, siendo superada por jugadoras de países como Japón, Alemania, Sudáfrica, China, Gran Bretaña y Países Bajos.

María Angélica, de 25 años de edad comenzó a jugar Tenis en Silla desde que tenía 11 años, y su progreso ha sido muy exitoso; el primer gran sueño que ha cumplido ha sido la clasificación a los Juegos Paralímpicos de Tokio, luego de lograr la medalla de oro en los Juegos Parapanamericanos de Lima 2019, ahora, éste que se convertiría en su ‘actual’ gran sueño, quedó pendiente para el próximo año, pero el entrenamiento para las justas japonesas sigue y aún con más fuerza cada día. Luego, en esa lista de sueños vendría el poder participar en el cuadro principal de un Grand Slam, y por cosas de la pandemia, este será el primero que cumpla en 2020, pues el US Open está a la vuelta de la esquina.

Como es tradicional en los torneos de esta modalidad, se jugará en sencillos y dobles, en este cuadro hará dupla con la estadounidense Dana Mathewson. El torneo en Silla de Ruedas se realizará del 10 al 13 de septiembre.

María Angélica Bernal will play a Grand Slam for the first time, an achievement that she gets for being the current number 10 in the world ranking of Adapted Tennis, a list in which she is also the only tennis player of the American continent, being surpassed by players from countries such as Japan, Germany, South Africa, China, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Maria Angélica, 25 years old, started playing Wheelchair Tennis since she was 11 years old, and her progress has been very successful; the first great dream that she has fulfilled has been to qualify for the Tokyo Paralympic Games, after winning the gold medal at the Parapan-American Games in Lima 2019, now, this which would become her ‘current’ great dream, is pending for next year, but the training for the Japanese games continues and with even more power every day. Then, in that list of dreams was to participate in the main draw of a Grand Slam, and due to the pandemic, this will be the first dream she will make true in 2020, since the US Open is just around the corner.

As it is traditional in tournaments of Wheelchair, it will be played in singles and doubles, in doubles draw she will be paired with the American Dana Mathewson. The Wheelchair tournament will be held from September 10 to 13.
