BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, 10 de abril de 2018.- Después de ocho confrontaciones frente a Brasil, Colombia logró el pasado fin de semana un histórico triunfo en la Copa Davis, el torneo de tenis por naciones más importante del mundo. Desde 1969, cuando se enfrentaron por primera vez en Bogotá, con triunfo para los brasileños 3:2, los colombianos no los habían podido derrotar, ni de local y de visitantes.

Pero la racha terminó, y los cafeteros quienes recibieron a Brasil en Barranquilla se impusieron 3:2, logrando así una vez más y por sexta ocasión, el cupo para disputar el repechaje por un cupo al Grupo Mundial, al cual nunca han podido ascender.

LA SERIE

El primer partido lo protagonizaron, Santiago Giraldo, el tenista experimentado del equipo y quien había decidido tener un receso de seis meses, tras la confrontación que Colombia perdió frente a Croacia en Bogotá, por el ascenso al Grupo Mundial, y el brasileño Thiago Monteiro. El triunfo de Monteiro fue contundente al imponerse con parciales de 6-1 y 6-2 en 1 hora de juego.

De esta manera, el juvenil Daniel Galán, raqueta número 1 de Colombia, y quien jugaba su segunda serie, luego de ser convocado para jugar contra Barbados en febrero, salía con la presión de emparejar el duelo. Su rival fue Guilherme Clezar número 234 del escalafón mundial de la ATP, quien comenzó ganando el juego 6-3, sin embargo. Para el segundo set, Galán logró tomar el control del partido y tras encajar 27 puntos, se lo llevó con un 6-2, con lo que forzó al tercer y definitivo set. Las cosas seguirían a favor del local quien se ‘lució’ y le dio a la afición una buena dosis de juego, hasta el punto de ganar 5 games seguidos y ceder solamente 1. Al final y luego de 1 hora y 59 minutos, cerró el juego 6-1 y empató la serie.

El segundo día comenzó con el partido de dobles entre Juan Sebastián Cabal y Robert Farah, 18 y 21 del ranking respectivamente, frente a Marcelo Melo y Marcelo Demoliner, ubicados en las casillas 1 y 55 de la ATP. Para muchos colombianos, este era el partido que sí o sí se ganaría, pero las cosas no salieron para los doblistas locales y se vieron doblegados en dos sets con parciales de 7-6(5) y 6-4 en 1 hora y 44 minutos.

Con este resultado, nuevamente sería Daniel Galán quien tenía en sus manos la posibilidad de volver a empatar la serie. Con lo mostrado frente a Clezan y lo visto de Thiago Monteiro contra Giraldo en la primera jornada, nadie se arriesgaba a dar un ganador. Pero la tranquilidad y el buen juego de Galán de 22 años, volvió a apoderarse de la cancha y con un público que nunca paró de animar, se impuso con un doble 6-3, ganando 63 puntos contra 48 de Monteiro, para así forzar al quinto y definitivo partido.

Para el juego definitivo, los capitanes Pablo González (COL) y Joao Zwetsch se decidieron por Alejandro González #307 y Joao Sorgi #361 respectivamente.

El primer set terminó a favor del colombiano 6-3, muchos esperaban la reacción de Sorgi y así fue, pues el segundo set estuvo parejo al punto de llegar a definirse en tie-break, pero la suerte estaba firmada para los locales. Alejandro no daba bola por perdida, incluso terminó en el piso por ir a responder, en una jugada espectacular. El final, no pudo ser mejor, pues González definió el tie-break 7:0 y de esta manera le dio el último y definitivo punto a Colombia, que celebró no solo el paso a los play-off para el ingreso al Grupo Mundial sino la victoria, por primera vez frente al gran Brasil.

Historic, Colombia defeats Brazil in Davis Cup

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, April 10, 2018.- After eight series played against Brazil, Colombia achieved a historic victory in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, the most important tennis tournament by nations in the world. Since 1969, when they met for first time in Bogota, with victory for the Brazilians 3:2, the Colombians had not been able to beat them, neither as locals nor as visitors.

But the results against ended, and the ‘cafeteros’ who received Brazil in Barranquilla won 3:2, achieving once again and for the sixth time, a place for the play-off to be in the World Group, in which they have never been.

THE SERIE

The first match was played by Santiago Giraldo, the experienced player of the team and who had decided to have a six-month break, after the series that Colombia lost against Croatia in Bogota, for the promotion to the World Group, and the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro. The victory of Monteiro was forceful and won 6-1, 6-2 in 1 hour.

With this result, the youth Daniel Galán, number 1 of Colombia, and who played his second series, after being called against Barbados in February, came out with the pressure to match the duel. His opponent was Guilherme Clezar #234 of the ATP world ranking. Clezan began winning the game 6-3, however, for the second set, Galán managed to take control of the match and after winning 27 points, he took it with a 6-2, which forced the third and final set. Things would continue in favor of the local who gave the fans a good dose of play, he won 5 games in a row and gave only 1. At the end and after 1 hour and 59 minutes, Galán closed the match 6-1 and tied the series.

The second day began with the doubles match between Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah, ATP #18 and #21 respectively, against Marcelo Melo and Marcelo Demoliner, #1 and #55 of the doubles ATP ranking. For many Colombians, this was the game that had to be won, but things did not work for the local pair and lost in two sets 7-6 (5), 6-4 in 1 hour and 44 minutes.

Being Colombia 2:1 down, it would be Daniel Galán again, who had in his hands the possibility of drawing the series once more. With the great match he had against Clezan and by what people saw of Thiago Monteiro against Giraldo on the first day, nobody risked giving a winner. However, with his tranquility and the good game, the 22 years old Galán, was the king in the court. The spectators that never stopped cheering, gave him more power and he won the match with a double 6-3, winning 63 points against 48 of Monteiro, with which he forced the fifth and final match.

For the last game, captains Pablo González (COL) and Joao Zwetsch named Alejandro González # 307 and Joao Sorgi # 361 respectively.

The first set ended for the Colombian 6-3. Many expected Sorgi’s reaction and so it was, because the second set was full of adrenaline, to the point to be defined in tie-break. But luck was signed for the locals. Alejandro did not give point for lost, even ended up on the floor to go to answer a ball, in a spectacular play. The end, could not be better for the spectators, because Gonzalez defined the tie-break 7:0 winning the final point, and giving to Colombia the pleasure to celebrated not only the pass to the play-off for the World Group, but the victory, for the first time against the great Brazil.
