MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, 7 de abril de 2020.- El presidente de la Federación Internacional de Natación, un de las más importantes del Mundo que preside el uruguayo Julio Maglione (84), dialogó con la AIPS y respondió nuestras consultas relacionadas con las postergación de los JJOO Tokio 2020, el calendario deportivo internacional y como seguirá el mundo del deporte luego que la pandemia permita reorganizar a la humanidad.

-Usted manifestó estar de acuerdo con la postergación de los Juegos y la forma en la que el COI actuó​ con prudencia y sin apresuramientos. ¿Era la fecha definitiva de los Juegos una preocupación​ fuerte entre las más importantes​ Federaciones Internacionales como la FINA que Ud. preside?

-Lo primero que me gustaría aclarar ante todo es que siempre nos pareció oportuno respetar la posición del Presidente Dr. Tomas Bach y acompañarlo. Actuó como lo que es; un líder. Consultó con todos, delegó la autoridad, pero cuando llegó el momento, la responsabilidad siempre fue de él y en ese sentido la asumió como gran dirigente que es en el momento de decisiones. Tanto como cuando precavidamente marcó un tiempo y tomó distancia de las presiones, como cuando acordó con el Gobierno de Japón – cuyo compromiso es extraordinario – la postergación. Aprovecho a agradecer – como dice nuestro comunicado de la FINA del pasado 30 de marzo – a las autoridades del comité organizador de Tokio 2020 y al gobierno de Japón – porque no solamente se comprometieron en la postergación sino que además aseguraron la realización el año que viene de los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos afrontando una situación inédita.

La fecha era una preocupación, más que nada porque implica que debemos revisar los calendarios de todas las competencias. En la natación tenemos mundial de piscina corta que iba a ser en diciembre, lo analizaremos. Tenemos el mundial de Natación en Fukuoka y otras actividades que habrá que resolver caso a caso con los organizadores, atletas, patrocinadores. Pero se resolverá no tengo dudas.

-Ya que aún restan por calificar un 43% de deportistas ¿Le parece adecuada la nueva fecha de los Juegos?​ ¿Entiende que permite ajustar los calendarios de los clasificatorios pendientes de manera efectiva?

-Es correctom faltan clasificar cerca de 5000 de los 11000 atletas que competirán en Tokio. La fecha nueva es apropiada porque plantea un año completo calendario para reubicar competencias. Yendo al corazón de la pregunta estamos seguros que se podrán armar todos los preolímpicos y clasificatorios pendientes sin dificultades.

Pero atención que tampoco sabemos hoy cuando esta pandemia nos dejará recomenzar la actividad deportiva ni cuál será el costo final, como quedaremos de todo esto.

Ahora mismo la preocupación pasa por otro lado. Hay que salvaguardar razonablemente la salud de los atletas, de los técnicos, de los oficiales que están trabajando y no correr riesgos. Lo demás es trabajo de escritorio con un almanaque y reuniones de negociación con comités de organización de competencias. La salud de mucha gente está en juego y eso parece ahora ser los trascendente.

-¿Cómo cree que afectará al deporte esta pandemia?

-No lo sé. No me gusta lo que está pasando. Estamos todos muy atentos a lo que sucede y como afecta a la sociedad toda no solamente al deporte. Pero como tantas otras cosas creo que pasará.

Sé que los deportistas y el mundo del deporte están a la altura de los acontecimientos y actúan con sensatez y responsabilidad atendiendo todas las recomendaciones. Somos una parte importante de la sociedad y entiendo muy sinceramente, que la actividad deportiva puede ayudar rápidamente a que podamos volver a la normalidad.​

FINA President Julio Maglione: «Bach acted as leader and the commitment of the Japanese government is extraordinary»​

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, April 7, 2020.-The president of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), one of the most important in the world, whose presidency is exercised by the Uruguayan sports leader and former swimmer Julio Maglione (84), spoke with AIPS and responded to our queries related to the postponement. After the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, we chatted about the international sports calendar and how the world of sport can continue after the pandemic allows humanity to reorganize.

-You stated that you agree with the postponement of the Games and the way in which the IOC acted prudently without haste. Was the final date of the Games a strong concern among the most important International Federations such as FINA?

-The first thing I would like to clarify above all is that we always felt that it was appropriate to respect Tomás Bach’s position and accompany him. He acted for what he is; a leader. He consulted with everyone, delegated authority, but when the time came, the responsibility was always his and, in that sense, he assumed it as a great leader, at the time of decisions. Just as when he cautiously marked a moment and distanced himself from the pressures, also when he agreed with the Government of Japan. The commitment of the Japanese government really is extraordinary, despite the postponement. I take this opportunity to thank, as our FINA statement of last March 30 says, the authorities of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee and the government of Japan, because they not only committed to postponing the Games, but also guaranteed the realization next year of the Olympic Games. They had to face an unprecedented situation.

-Given that there are still 43% of athletes who must compete for their place to participate in Tokyo: Does the new date of the next Games seem appropriate? Do you understand that it allows you to adjust the schedules of the pending qualifying tournaments effectively?

-It is right; there are still about 5,000 athletes to qualify out of the 11,000 who will compete in Tokyo. The new date is appropriate because it raises ahead, a complete calendar year to relocate the competitions. Going to the heart of the question, we are sure that all the pending pre-Olympic tournaments, qualifiers to Tokyo, can be played without difficulties. But keep in mind that today we do not know when this pandemic will allow us to restart sports activity or what the final cost will be; nobody knows how we will be left after all this.

Right now the concern goes the other way. The health of athletes, coaches, and officials who are working must be reasonably safeguarded and not take risks. The rest is desk work with an almanac and negotiation meetings with competition organizing committees. The health of many people is at stake and that now seems to be the transcendent.

-How do you think this pandemic will affect sports?

-I do not know. Does anyone know? I don’t like what’s going on.

We are all very attentive to what is happening and how it affects society as a whole, not just sports. But like so many other things I think it will happen. I am optimistic despite how painful it is.

I know that athletes and the world of sports are up to the task and act sensibly and responsibly, following all the recommendations. We are an important part of society; I understand very sincerely, that sports activity can be of great help, quickly, so that we can return to normalcy.
