A new taekwondo event called Team Kyorugui joins the sport program of the Pan American Games this October in Santiago, Chile. Santiago 2023 will be the first multi-sport Games in the world to ever include the event. SANTIAGO, CHILE (March 1, 2023) — Team Kyorugui is an attractive taekwondo event that has its own World Championship that began in 2006. Since then, the member countries of Panam Sports have found success in the sport, with Mexico leading the total medal count at the World Championships. The country won gold in Abdijan 2013 and two silvers in Queretaro 2014 and Mexico City 2015. The United States has also medaled in these championships with a bronze at Baku 2016. Given the continent’s success at the World Championships, this event will join the official sport program of a multisport Games for the first time in history this October at Santiago 2023. After several meetings between the Panam Sports Technical Commission and the Pan American Taekwondo Union, the two sides reached an agreement to include the competition as a medal event at the Games. “Our Technical Commission has reached an important agreement with the Pan American Taekwondo Union and we are very happy to have this attractive event in our sports program. This inclusion of Team Kyorugui does not represent any additional cost for the organization of the Games, nor should the countries add more athletes. It is a team event that will feature athletes who already qualified in the individual competitions. With this, the countries of the Americas will have the opportunity to compete for a new medal in both women’s and men’s in this sport,» said Panam Sports Secretary General Ivar Sisniega. “Having Team Kyorugui present at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games gives the opportunity to countries that do not have the capacity to develop in other disciplines, to be able to do so in this format that is actually extremely attractive to fans and is a true spectacle for the media due to the high technical level shown,” said PATU President and World Taekwondo Federation Vice President, Juan Manuel Lopez Delgado. Team Kyorugui was featured as a demonstration event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and was lauded by the public and the media that attended the event held in Hall A of the Makuhari Messe. Before the event is featured at the Pan American Games, the Pan American Taekwondo Union will make a strategic stop in the Dominican Republic where the first Team Kyorugui Pan American Championship will be held on April 29. After the Taekwondo Qualifying Tournament to Santiago 2023, scheduled from March 22-23 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a Team Kyorugui tournament will take place at the Pan-Am Series II event taking place March 24-27 in the same Brazilian city where the seeding will be determined for the Pan American Games. The sport of Taekwondo made its debut at the Pan American Games at Indianapolis 1987, with Santiago 2023 marking its 10th appearance at the continent’s most important multisport event. The athletes who qualify in the four Olympic weight classes in both the men’s and women’s tournaments will also be the Team Kyorugui participants for each National Federation. Taekwondo will take place at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games from October 21 to 24 in the new Contact Sports Center located in the National Stadium Park and awards points towards Olympic qualification to Paris 2024.
