El Periodista Deportivo colombiano, Chelo de Castro de 101 años, recibió el premio a Toda una Vida, otorgado por la Asociación Internacional de Prensa Deportiva – AIPS. Don Chelo es el único periodista tal vez de todo el mundo, que puede decir que ha sobrevivido a dos pandemias, aunque la Gripa Española se haya terminado tan solo un mes después de su nacimiento.

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, 29 de marzo de 2021.- Cumplir 101 años es de por si una hazaña, hacerlo durante una pandemia, lo es más, pero haber estado vigente como Periodista Deportivo hasta los 100, es de decirlo y no creerlo, sencillamente es para tener el nombre del dueño de esos 101 años en el libro de los Guinness Records.

Hoy día, sus letras y su voz se han apagado, el cansancio de más de un siglo en este mundo se ha apoderado de él, poco habla y ya no se mueve solo. Justamente, la noche anterior a la Gala Virtual de los AIPS Sport Media Awards, donde fue condecorado con el premio a Toda una Vida, tuvo una recaída, pero no dudó en ser llevado a la sala de la casa de Chelito, su hijo menor, -la cual queda dentro de la misma vivienda de don Chelo- para estar presente, aunque un poco incómodo, y recibir la distinción como el Periodista Deportivo más longevo que se conoce sobre la faz de la tierra. Por momentos abría sus ojos y cuando su hijo José Víctor y su esposa le decían que lo iban a condecorar a nivel mundial, se sonreía como muestra de agradecimiento.

SU HISTORIA EN EL PERIODISMO DEPORTIVO SIEMPRE EN UNA MÁQUINA DE ESCRIBIR

José Víctor de Castro Carroll, más conocido como ‘Chelo de Castro’ nació el 19 de marzo de 1920, justamente un mes antes del fin de la pandemia de la Gripa Española. A la edad de 25 años, comenzó su carrera como Periodista Deportivo en su natal Barranquilla. El primer medio de comunicación que le abrió las puertas fue el semanario La Unidad; después, desde 1950 hasta 1960 trabajó en el diario La Prensa para luego pasar al vespertino El Nacional. En 1968 hizo parte del Diario del Caribe y desde 1967 ingresó a El Heraldo donde fue columnista, tipeando por 40 años ininterrumpidamente, -en máquina de escribir- de lunes a viernes hasta diciembre de 2016; después de esa fecha lo hacía dos o tres veces por semana. Sin embargo, la Columna de Chelo de Castro tiene historia al haber pasado por todos los medios anteriormente mencionados. Cabe destacar que Don Chelo, quien vivió la llegada de toda la tecnología en este mundo, siempre se negó a dejar su máquina de escribir, nunca escribió una sola crónica en un computador. En su oficina de El Heraldo, conservaba una, para su uso exclusivo y en casa tenía otras más, “escribía en casa en cualquiera de las cinco máquinas de escribir que tengo. Tenía muchas y ahora no me sirven para nada: tengo problemas de vista y me resulta imposible escribir. Ahora le dicto a un nieto, Chelito de Castro, estamos compenetrados para no pasarnos del espacio que dispongo», le dijo a Estewil Quesada, Presidente de la Asociación Colombiana de Periodistas del Atlántico, hace unos años.

100 AÑOS PARECEN POCO, SOLAMENTE LA PANDEMÍA LO CAYÓ

Según su esposa Judith Vásquez, “Chelo ha trabajado siempre, todos los días de la semana, no importa si eran fines de semana o festivos, pero desde que empezó la pandemia tuvo que parar”, y es que sus 75 años como Periodista Deportivo, solo se vieron truncados por el Covid-19. Hasta el año 2020, ‘Don Chelo’ seguía activo, y como si los años no le pasaran, aunque un poco más lento, bajaba las escaleras de su casa, ayudado por alguno de sus siete hijos, para ir a ‘Radio Aeropuerto’, donde tenía su programa ‘Desfile Deportivo’ y donde hacía lo que le encantaba, hablar de deportes, especialmente de fútbol, deporte por excelencia en Colombia y de boxeo y béisbol, dos disciplinas de la costa caribe colombiana que han sido semilleros de grandes atletas a nivel mundial, al igual que de atletismo, deporte que le apasionaba porque además lo practicó en la modalidad de Salto con Pértiga.

Cuando tenía 85, habló por primera vez del retiro, dijo que lo haría cuando cumpliera los 90, sin embargo, la vida le dio 10 años más para seguir siendo un ejemplo vivo de lo que es realmente la pasión por una profesión. “Él cumplió los 100 años el 19 de marzo del año 2020, y el día anterior 18 o 17 de marzo, no recuerdo bien, estuvo en Radio Aeropuerto haciendo su último programa, igualmente, el día 19 marzo en el Heraldo salió la última crónica escrita por él. Desde entonces, no volvió a la emisora ni tampoco volvió escribir ninguna Crónica”, cuenta José María, su hijo mayor. Y es que ese mismo día comenzó la pandemia, todo se cerró, incluso su familia no pudo celebrarle su centenario de vida, “desde entonces, él cayó en una especie de postración, no ha querido moverse, nosotros solamente le ponemos música y hablamos con él, hay días que está más locuaz y conversa abiertamente, pero otros días no quiere hablar”, continúo José María. La última columna que se publicó de don Chelo en el diario El Heraldo fue “LA VEZ QUE ‘PAMBELÉ’ SE COMIÓ UN POSTRE ARGENTINO”.

La pandemia del Covid-19, pudo haber contribuido bastante a su retiro, pues, aunque ya lo había pensado y a pesar de no poder escribir personalmente, su pasión por el Periodismo Deportivo seguía intacta, con la ayuda de su hijo José María o alguien más de la familia, llegaba a la emisora, lo cual lo hacía sentirse activo y productivo, “yo lo llevaba a la emisora y el caminaba, claro, agarrado del brazo, lo dejaba allá, salía a hacer mis cosas y luego regresaba y él estaba ahí sentado esperándome”. Pero es que, una persona tan activa como él, prácticamente adicta al trabajo, seguramente se sintió afectado por el encierro, aunque claro, ya con 100 años, físicamente también era muy difícil seguir.

«El periodista actual tiene mejor formación profesional que el de antaño: sale de una universidad preparado. El mal que tiene es que lee poco. No cultiva la lectura. Y los de deportes, casi todos, menosprecian la historia deportiva».

Don Chelo es además el único sobreviviente de los creadores en 1948, de la Asociación Colombiana de Redactores Deportivos (Acord), la cual nació justamente en Barranquilla.

CHELO

Pasaron muchos años y desde que escuché por primera vez sobre él, para mí siempre se llamó Chelo, Víctor nunca fue un nombre que yo relacionara con el gran maestro del Periodismo Deportivo, y curiosamente sus siete hijos también son conocidos como ‘Chelito’ …. “este es un apodo familiar que viene desde hace más o menos 5 o 6 generaciones” dice José María su hijo mayor; “que yo tenga conocimiento, mi bisabuelo que también se llamaba José María de Castro era conocido como Chelo, y de ahí mi abuelo, José María de Castro también adoptó el apodo, luego a mi papá le empezaron a llamar así y a mí que soy el mayor, igualmente, pero con el tiempo, en la familia ya hay varios Chelitos”, dice con una sonrisa, el sobrenombre se ha vuelto tan popular que a todos les dicen Chelito. Me causa curiosidad saber cómo hacen para identificar en la familia a quien se están refiriendo cuando hay más de un Chelo, a lo que José María me responde “En casa nos decimos cada cual por el nombre y cada uno está plenamente identificado” y entre risas continúa “el problema es cuando llaman por teléfono a la casa, entonces se tiene que preguntar, ¿con quién quiere hablar?, con el periodista, con el músico, con el empresario o con cuál de todos”.

Como buen barranquillero, a Don Chelo le encanta la música, no solo para escucharla, sino también para bailar, “le gustaba mucho el carnaval de Barranquilla”, añadió Judith.

ASCENDENCIA

Por la migración en la época de la colonización, no es extraño que en Barranquilla se encuentren apellidos que no sean netamente del Español, y aunque el De Castro es muy español, -pues es uno de los cinco linajes procedentes de los primitivos reyes de Castilla-, para el caso de esta familia llegó de Portugal, muy seguramente proveniente desde la famosa reina de ese país, Isabel de Castro. Carroll, por su parte, tiene sus raíces en Irlanda, se dice que pudo haber sido el sobrenombre de un guerrero feroz, bueno, es la teoría, pues no lo sabemos a ciencia cierta.

—ENGLISHMORE THAN A CENTENNIAL OF HISTORY IN SPORTS JOURNALISM

The 101-year-old Colombian Sports Journalist, Chelo de Castro, received the ‘A Life in Sport’ recognition, awarded by the International Sports Press Association – AIPS. Don Chelo is the only journalist, perhaps in the whole world, who can say that he has survived two pandemics, although the Spanish Flu has ended just a month after his birth.

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia, March 29, 2021.- Being 101 years old is actually a feat, doing it during a pandemic year, it is even more, but having been in force as a Sports Journalist until the age of 100, that is to say and not believe, it is simply to have the name of the owner of those 101 years in the Guinness Records Book.

Today, his words and his voice have faded, the fatigue of more than a century in this world has taken hold of him, he speaks little and no longer moves alone. Precisely, the night before the Virtual Gala of the AIPS Sport Media Awards, where he was awarded with the A Life in Sport recognition, he had a relapse, but he did not hesitate to be taken to the living room of Chelito’s house, his youngest son, -which is inside the home of Don Chelo- to be present; although a bit uncomfortable, and receive the distinction as the longest-lived Sports Journalist known on the earth. At times he would open his eyes and when his son José Víctor and his wife told him that he was going to be award worldwide, he smiled as a signal of appreciation.

HIS STORY IN SPORTS JOURNALISM ALWAYS ON A TYPEWRITER

José Víctor de Castro Carroll, better known as ‘Chelo de Castro’ was born on March 19, 1920 just a month before the end of the Spanish Flu pandemic. At the age of 25, he began his career as a Sports Journalist in his native Barranquilla. The first media company that opened its doors to him was the weekly La Unidad; later, from 1950 to 1960, he worked in the newspaper La Prensa and after went on to the evening newspaper El Nacional. In 1968 he was part of the Diario del Caribe and from 1967 he joined El Heraldo where he was a columnist, typing for 40 years uninterruptedly, -on a typewriter- from Monday to Friday until December 2016; after that date he did it two or three times per week. However, the Columna de Chelo de Castro has a history having gone through all the aforementioned medias. It should be noted that Don Chelo, who experienced the arrival of all technology in this world, always refused to leave his typewriter, never wrote a single article on a computer. In his office in El Heraldo, he kept one for his exclusive use and at home he had others, “I wrote at home on any of the five typewriters I have. I had many and now they are not of any use to me: I have vision problems and it is impossible for me to write. Now I dictate to my grandson, Chelito de Castro, we are in a bond not to go beyond the space I have», he told Estewil Quesada, President of the Colombian Sports Press Association, Atlántico branch, a few years ago.

100 YEARS SEEMS LITTLE, ONLY THE PANDEMIC SILENCED HIM

According to his wife Judith Vásquez, «Chelo has always worked, every day of the week, it does not matter if it was weekends or bank holidays, but since the pandemic began, he had to stop», and the thing is, that his 75 years as a Sports Journalist, were only truncated by the Covid-19. Until 2020, ‘Don Chelo’ was still active, and as if the years did not pass him, although a little slower, he would go down the stairs of his house, helped by one of his seven children, to go to ‘Radio Aeropuerto’, where he had his program ‘Desfile Deportivo’ and where he did what he loved, talking about sports, especially football, a sport by excellence in Colombia and boxing and baseball, two disciplines of the Colombian Caribbean coast that have been hotbeds of great athletes worldwide, as well as athletics, a sport that he was passionate about because he also practiced it in the Pole Vault modality.

When he was 85, he spoke for the first time about retirement, he said that he would do it when he turned 90, however, life gave him 10 more years to continue being a living example of what passion for a profession really is. “He turned 100 on March 19, 2020, and the day before March 18 or 17, I don’t remember well, he was at Radio Aeropuerto doing his last program, likewise, on March 19 in El Heraldo the last chronicle written by him was published. Since then, he has not been in the radio station nor has he written any piece”, says José María, his eldest son. And it is that the same day the pandemic began, everything was closed, even his family could not celebrate his centenary of life, “since then, he fell into a kind of prostration, he has not wanted to move, we only play music and talked to him, there are days when he is more talkative and talks openly, but other days he doesn’t want to speak” José María continued. The last column of Don Chelo that was published in the newspaper El Heraldo was «THE TIME ‘PAMBELÉ’ EAT AN ARGENTINE DESSERT.»

The Covid-19 pandemic could have contributed a lot to his retirement, well, although he already thought about it and despite not being able to write personally, his passion for Sports Journalism was still intact, with the help of his son José María or someone else in the family, was going to the radio station, which made him feel active and productive, “I used to take him to the radio station and he was going walking, of course, holding by my arm, I was leaving him there, going out to do my things and then coming back and he was sitting there waiting for me”. But it is that, a person as active as him, practically addicted to work, surely felt affected by the lockdown, although, of course, with already 100 years on his shoulders, physically it was also very difficult to continue.

«The current journalist has better professional training than the one of yesteryear: he leaves a university well prepared. The problem he has is that he reads little. He does not cultivate the reading. And those of sports, almost all, underestimate sports history».

Don Chelo is also the only survivor of the creators in 1948, of the Colombian Sports Press Association (Acord), which was born precisely in Barranquilla.

CHELO

Many years passed and since I first heard about him, for me he was always being Chelo, Víctor was never a name that I related to the great Master of Sports Journalism, and curiously, his seven children are also known as ‘Chelito’ …. «This is a family nickname that has been around for 5 or 6 generations» says José María, his eldest son; “As far as I know, my great-grandfather who was also called José María de Castro was known as Chelo, and hence my grandfather, José María de Castro also adopted the nickname, then they began to call my father like that and also me who are the oldest, but over time, there are already several Chelitos in the family” he says with a smile, the nickname has become so popular that they all are call Chelito. I am curious to know how within the family they do to identify to whom they are referring to when there is more than one Chelo, to which José María replies «At home we call each other by the real name and each one is fully identified» and by laughing he continues “the problem is when there is a phone call to the house, then we have to ask, who do you want to talk to? with the journalist, with the musician, with the businessman or who with of all”

As a good Barranquilla man, Don Chelo loves music, not only to listen to it, but also to dance, “he really liked the Barranquilla carnival” Judith added.

ANCESTRY

Due to migration at the time of colonization, it is not strange to find in Barranquilla surnames not hundred percent from the Spanish, and although De Castro is very Spanish, -because it is one of the five lineages from the primitive kings of Castile – in this family’s case, it came from Portugal, most likely from the famous queen of that country, Isabel de Castro. Carroll, on the other hand, has its roots in Ireland, it is said that it could have been the nickname of a fierce warrior, well, it is the theory, because we do not know for sur
