BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 16 de agosto de 2017.- Cinco años después Éider Arévalo volvió a Londres, esta vez para afrontar el Mundial de Atletismo Mayores en la modalidad de Marcha 20km, el deporte que le robó el corazón algunos años atrás. Llegó nuevamente a la capital londinense, donde durante los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012 no tuvo su mejor participación.

Pero la vida le daría la revancha, volvería a ese lugar donde ya había soñado con ganar una medalla de oro en esa categoría, sueño que hasta el momento estaba en pausa, aunque para este colombiano, la alegría de estar en lo más alto del podio no es nueva, pues como junior ya ganó la presea mundial dorada en 2010 en Chiguagua, México y en 2012 en Moscú, Rusia, donde además clasificó para los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012. “Desde el 2012 yo abrí en los Juegos Olímpicos, allá mismo en Londres, el sueño de ganar una medalla en la categoría mayores…y así fue, después de cinco años de trabajo, de cinco años de proceso, donde hubo muchas caídas y muchos triunfos también, lo logré; esta fue la formación que tuve y esta es la experiencia que se saca en este triunfo”. Y Así regresó a su amada Colombia, acompañado de su familia, y de esa medalla de oro.

El colombiano registró un tiempo de 1:18:53 y en el podio estuvo acompañado por Sergei Shirobokov de Rusia (1:18:55) y por Caio Oliveira de Sena de Brasil (1:19:04).

-Además de su calidad deportiva, ¿cuál cree que fue el punto para haber ganado esta medalla de oro?

-Lo más importante de este resultado fue la tranquilidad que tuvimos antes del evento, porque tanto el equipo como yo tuvimos una preparación enfocada en Pontevedra, España. Es la primera vez que todo el equipo de marcha estuvo concentrado durante 4 semanas, fue importante y positivo adaptarnos al cambio de clima y de hora, estar tranquilos, y de esta manera fue más sencillo llegar a Londres.

-¿Cómo recuerda la competencia?

-En la carrera siempre estuve en el lote, muy tranquilo, en los primeros kilómetros estuve aproximadamente quinto o sexto… para el kilometró 10 aumentaron más el ritmo, luego en el kilómetro 16 me sentía muy tranquilo y decidí salir porque sentía que tenía las condiciones, sentía que podía empezar a aumentar el ritmo, así que en ese momento salí haciendo lo que habíamos hecho durante los entrenamientos. Allí se empezó a romper el lote y en los últimos 3kms quedamos cuatro atletas, un surafricano, un brasileño, un ruso y yo… y lo más decisivo fueron los últimos 2kms donde quedábamos el ruso y yo, y algo curioso es que le había dicho al profe, “profe téngamela la bandera, que ésta bandera la vamos a izar entrando a la meta”, -ese era el sueño que yo tenía desde hace tiempo, ganar un mundial y con la bandera izada a la espalda-, el profe me la pasa aun estando con el ruso en remate, yo la tenía en la mano… cuando entramos en el último retorno, me acordé de la bandera y dije. ESTO ES POR COLOMBIA y en ese momento fue donde me salió un poco más de fuerza y por la bendición de Dios que siempre me da fuerza, pude sacar esa pequeña ventaja e izarme la bandera y poder ganar la competencia.

-Ahora que ya está de regreso a Colombia y más tranquilo, ¿qué significa este logro para usted?

-Ya con cabeza fría, es ver este triunfo reflejado en que hay talento en el país y que podemos tener muchas más medallas como esta no solo en atletismo sino en otros deportes

-¿Qué es lo que más destaca de Luis Fernando López, el primer colombiano medallista de oro en los Mundiales de Atletismo?

-Fernando hace gran parte de esta medalla, cuando yo llegue en 2009 él ya era parte del grupo, siempre ha sido parte del grupo y digamos que ha sido también mi entrenador, porque he recibido muchos consejos de él y lo que hoy deja él de su carrera deportiva, es haber sido campeón del mundo y dejar a Eider Arévalo que fue parte de él, siendo campeón del mundo también.

EL COMPAÑERO SILENCIOSO

Detrás de los logros de los atletas siempre hay un grupo multidisciplinario al que Éider agradeció a su regreso al país, pero también está el entrenador, ese ser que trabaja las mismas o tal vez más horas que el atleta, el que acompaña en los entrenamientos y quien llega a casa a planificar lo que hay que corregir o mejorar y en lo que hay que intensificar. En su corta pero productiva carrera, ha tenido como entrenadores a Edward Chilito, Fernando Rozo (Q.E.P.D.) a Enrique Peña y a Marcelino Pastrana con quien trabaja en la actualidad.

THE WORLD´S GOLD MEDAL IS NOT A DREAM ANYMORE, ÉIDER ARÉVALO COLOMBIAN WALKER CHAMPION LONDON 2017

BOGOTA, Colombia, 16 August, 2017.- Five years later Éider Arévalo returned to London, this time to take part at the IAAF World Championships, competing in the 20km Race Walk, the sport that stole his heart some years ago. He returned to the London capital, where during the 2012 Olympic Games he did not have his best performance.

But life would give him a revenge, he went back to that place where he had already dreamed of winning a gold medal in that senior category, a dream that until now was in pause, although for this Colombian athlete, the joy of being at the top of the podium is not new, because as a junior he won the World Gold Medal in Chiguagua, Mexico 2010 and in Moscow, Russia 2012, where he also qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. «Since 2012 I opened at the Olympic Games -also there in London-, the dream of winning a medal in the senior category … and so, after five years of hard work, five years of process, where there were many falls and many victories too, I did it;”. And so, he returned to his beloved Colombia, accompanied by his family, and that gold medal.

The Colombian registered a time of 1:18:53 and on the podium was accompanied by Sergei Shirobokov of Russia (1:18:55) and Caio Oliveira de Sena of Brazil (1:19:04).

– In addition to your sports quality, what do you think was the fact to have won this gold medal?

– The most important of this result was the peace we had before the event, because both, the team and I had a focused preparation on Pontevedra, Spain. It was the first time that the whole Walk Race team was concentrated for 4 weeks, it was important and positive to adapt to the weather condition, the time changed but also to be calm, and in this way it was easier to reach London.

-How do you remember the competition?

-At the race I was always in the first group, very calm, in the first kilometres I was between fifth and sixth … for the 10km they speed up a bit, and then at the 16km I was still feeling very calm and decided to speed up more, I felt I had the conditions, I felt that I could start to increase the rhythm of my walk, so in that moment I started to do what we had done during the training time. At that moment, the group started to break, in the last 3kms we were four athletes, a South African, a Brazilian, a Russian and myself … but the most decisive moment were the last 2kms where we were only the Russian and I, and I am telling you something curious, I had said to my coach «Coach please hold the flag, this flag we are going to raise when crossing the final line» -that was the dream I had for a long time, to win a World Championship and with the flag raising behind my back-, he gave it to me even while with the Russian fighting shoulder by shoulder, I had it in my hand … when we entered the last return on the course, I remembered I had the flag and thought, THIS IS FOR COLOMBIA and at that moment I got more strength and for God´s blessing who always gives me strength, I could take that little advantage to finally raise the flag and win the competition.

-Now that you are back in Colombia, what does this achievement means to you? 

-Already with a cool head, I can see that this triumph reflected the talent we have in the country and that we can have many more medals like this one, not only in athletics -walk race-, but in other sports

-What is what you highlight from Luis Fernando López, the first Colombian gold medallist in the Athletics World Championships?

-Fernando is a great part of this medal, when I arrived in 2009 he was already part of the group, he has always been part of the group, and let’s say he has also been my coach, because I have received many advices from him. And what today he leaves from his career is to have been a World Champion and to leave Eider Arévalo who was part of him, being a World Champion as well.

THE SILENT COMPANION

Behind the achievements of the athletes there is always a multidisciplinary team that Éider thanked at his return to the country, but there is also a coach, that human being who works the same or perhaps more hours than the athlete, who accompanies in training and who goes home to plan what needs to be corrected or improved and what needs to be intensified. In his short but productive career, Eider has had some coaches such as Edward Chilito, Fernando Rozo (R.I.P.), Enrique Peña and Marcelino Pastrana with whom he works nowadays.
