Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes won anincident-packed Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday but teammate LewisHamilton took some of the shine off his triumph by finishing thirdafter starting in the last row.World Formula 1 champion Hamilton benefited from a chaotic start anda safety car period caused by a heavy crash by Renault’s KevinMagnussen, who was taken to hospital with an ankle injury, to rescuean unlikely podium place.The result means Hamilton stays top of the drivers’ standings, ninepoints ahead of Rosberg, who collected his first win inSpa-Francorchamps, his sixth of the season and the 20th of hiscareer.An eventful race saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and the Ferraris ofKimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel come together on the first turn,and continued with Magnussen’s crash and several overtakingincidents.Rosberg though was able to stay out of trouble from pole and took thechequered flag 14.113 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.In a turbulent start, Verstappen, on the front row alongside Rosberg,was surprised by the Ferraris and then was squeezed out on the insideon the first turn. He had nowhere to go and shunted Raikkonen, whowas sandwiched between teammate Sebastian Vettel and the Red Bull.All three had to come into the pits for repairs, with the Ferrariteam also having to put out a fire under Raikkonen’s car as he wasfitted with a new wing.Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz skidded out with a shredded rear tyre toend his race, while an action-packed opening spell continued whenMagnussen lost control of his Renault and crashed heavily into tyrebarriers at Eau Rouge.Magnussen was led away limping with an ankle injury, his carcompletely wrecked, while the safety car came out.Hamilton, who started on the back row after grid penalties, was themain beneficiary from the problems ahead of him as he briskly movedup the field.With the safety car out and some drivers pitting, Hamilton wasalready fifth from 21st after seven laps, while McLaren’s FernandoAlonso, who started last, was fourth.The red flag then came out to halt the race while the barrier on turnfour was repaired, Rosberg at this stage ahead of Ricciardo and theForce India of Nico Huelkenberg.Dutch teenager Verstappen kept the thousands of Dutch fans, many cladin orange, on their feet in the stands as he fought tough battleswith both Raikkonen and Vettel.Raikkonen and Verstappen touched while fighting for 14th place, whenthe Ferrari driver had to go wide and cut a corner while attemptingto overtake.»Do I have to let the Red Bull (Max Verstappen) past? His onlyinterest is to push me off the track,» Raikkonen said over the teamradio when asking whether he now had to give way.A second attempt to get past was blocked by Verstappen, resulting inanother angry radio message from the Finn.Hamilton, who was meanwhile up to third on lap 18 after overtakingAlonso and Huelkenberg, pitted on lap 22 of the 44 laps with softtyres, and again on lap 33 with medium.He got back ahead of Huelkenberg but could not challenge Ricciardoand finished third ahead of the Force India driver and his teammateSergio Perez.Vettel recovered to finish sixth, with Alonso seventh ahead ofValtteri Bottas in a Williams, Raikkonen and Felipe Massa in aWilliams.
