Rio de Janeiro (dpa) – German public broadcaster ARD has apologised for a commentary during the Olympic equestrian competition in which German rider Julia Krajewski was described as a «scaredy cat» with «a brown streak» in her trousers.

«The choice of words was totally inappropriate,» the ARD Olympic team chief Gerd Gottlob told dpa Tuesday.

«I can only apologise for it on behalf of the ARD. I promise that this will not happen again.»

Equestrian sport commentator Carsten Sostmeier had been commentating on the German Olympic newcomer Krajewski whose horse Samourai refused three jumps.

Sostmeier, 56, a prize-winning commentator, said of 27-year-old Krajewski’s performance that she «had a brown streak in her trousers from the beginning.»
