Berlin (dpa) – Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund on Thursday announced the signing of Portugal defender Raphael Guerreiro on a four-year contract until 2020.

The 22-year-old left back joins Dortmund from French side Lorient. No financial details were given but the transfer fee has been estimated at 12 million euros (13.5 million dollars).

«Raphael Guerreiro is a skilful player who feels at home in a wide range of positions,» Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc said in a club statement.

Guerreiro has a French mother and Portuguese father, and both nationalities. He grew up playing in the French youth national team ranks with the likes of Juventus’ Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid but then chose to represent Portugal.

He has seven Portugal caps and played in their first Euro 2016 game in France, a 1-1 draw with Iceland on Tuesday.

Guerreiro is Dortmund’s sixth summer signing, following Marc Bartra, Emre Mor, Sebastian Rode, Ousmane Dembele and Mikel Merino.

Dortmund have however also lost Ilkay Guendogan to Manchester City and Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich, while they have told unsettled midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan he has to stay.
