Berlin (dpa) – Borussia Dortmund travel to China for a pre-season tournament in July with matches against the two Manchester sides United and City, the Bundesliga top club said on Wednesday.
Dortmund will open the so-called Champions Cup China on July 22 in Shanghai against United, and their match against City – then with Pep Guardiola at the helm – is in Shenzhen, likely on July 28.
In-between Beijing will host the first Manchester derby outside Britain on July 25.
«The fact that we, as a non-Premier League club, have been invited to such an extraordinary tournament is a sign of recognition for BVB’s excellent performance in recent years,» Dortmund marketing and sales director Carsten Cramer said.
Dortmund will be in China for the first time, but they were also in Asia last year with games in Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. The 1997 Champions League winners have also opened an office in Singapore to have a presence in the lucrative Asian market.
Dortmund, second behind Bayern Munich in the current Bundesliga season, will also hold training camps in Austria and Switzerland ahead of the 2016-17 campaign which starts in mid-August.
